My band - Punkrockers.com profile, Myspace profile
Yeah, Celtic punk and folk is pretty much my passion. I've got a million and a half bands I can recommend and thanks to my connections to Paddyrock.com and the OU newspaper, I've had the opportunity to meet Flogging Molly and to become friends with The Tossers and Flatfoot 56 (check my profile pics if you don't believe me). If you're unfamiliar with these sites, check out some of the bands featured on Paddyrock.com and Shite'n'Onions. Among the well known bands, I especially love Flogging Molly, The Pogues, The Tossers, The Real McKenzies, Flatfoot 56 and Dropkick Murphys. For not-as-famous Celtic rock bands, I'd have to say The Killigans, Black 47 and The Mahones are favorites.

Yeah, I don't get why so many Americans who are into this kind of music act all pro-IRA. I mean, I'm for Irish independence if they want it, but I'm just not so big on violence. I realize it's not much different from what the Americans did, but shit, I hate for anyone to die. At least they haven't been as big a problem as of late.

forums,
I am glad to find out about this genre, i think this might be my thing, i used to go around playing the theme to "MASH" on my Irish penny whistle. INSIDE joke, My best friend as an elementary schooler (was Korean) and had a brother, and his brothers friend was 'Irish and failing' at scoring with their sister, who was the hottest girl in the neighborhood. I laugh to myself every time i see that show mash, This PINK single is the first thing ive heard like this. Please recommend links to this genre. My reality is caught up in Protestant Catholic hostility in North America at this time, I think this phenomena is interesting , and significant. please investigate. god bless av

What annoys me though is you get these american celti bands who think they're irish and start singing about the ira. Your're american, not irish, you don't live in nothern ireland, you live on the otherside of the world. The ira got loads of it's weapons from america.
I've been to northen ireland to help out with a charity there, and there still quite a lot of republicanism. There's also a constant atmosphere in the air. Beautiful country though.

As a note:
I support Northern Ireland staying English... Because they vote that way, dudes. I also do not support songs always having Irish themes. It gets on my nerves a little.

Yeah. I'm not pro-IRA. I agree the north has every right to stay within the UK if that's the way the majority feels about it. I'm definitely glad to see some more cooperation out of Sinn Fein as of late as well.
I am guilty of writing a couple of really Irish songs. "Dublin: Easter, 1916" is about the Easter Uprising. I tried to keep it as historically accurate as I could, though even I admit it having some pro-Republican leanings. But the south wanted their independence and I support that. Considering I've heard stories that there are still "No Gingers" signs in parts of the UK, I can understand why they wanted to be independent. "My Weary Irish Eyes" is another song I wrote, but it's a song about being seperated from a loved one, not specifically about Ireland. All of our other songs are just Celtic in general and not really nationality specific, save for our versions of "Loch Lomond" and "Amazing Grace," which are both Scottish traditionals. We brand our music as Celtic-American, since we bring in a lot of influences besides the Celtic stuff, like country, swing, ska and even bits of reggae and metal. And dfh44us, I would recommend to you the bands I mentioned in my earlier post: Flogging Molly, The Pogues, The Tossers, The Real McKenzies, Flatfoot 56, Dropkick Murphys, Black 47, The Mahones and The Killigans. Each band has a distinct sound.
