i got a pair years ago, right before they started making them in china, saved up a long time to get them because i heard how good they were. well after 3 months the heel and out facing side of the right boot suddenly became completely detached from the sole. i tried to send them back because they obviously fucked up when making them because they didnt get a whole lot of use and i took good care of them and they wouldnt take them back and i said then that i would never waste the money on another pair

They are fashionable items to me, not strong enough to last me, instead i went for a £35 par of Nitrax.

Note that my choice was made only because i couldn't find ANY Rangers in Camden but i might well still try to find some second hand.

I have nothing against people chosing Docs but i wouldn't ware them anymore, my first and last dated from 1988.

really? well that sucks! I've only heard of one other story like that, but i heard they had this guarantee thing that they will fix them? I don't know.

I recently haven't treating mine all that nicely, and they are holding up very well. I am really impressed with them. I wear them almost every day, they are so comfortable. When I switch back to converse, my feet are so spoiled that they hurt at the end of the day from not wearing my docs :P

I bought my first pair of Dr. Martens in the early 90s. I can't remember what year though. I think maybe 93. 1994 at the latest. I beat the shit out of 'em. I never polished them or took care of them or anything. They lasted me about 7-8 years.

I've had a new pair since 09, and they're still holding up quite well.

I hear that they make 'em in China now. Does anybody know if they are officially licensed or if they are counterfeit?

I would only buy the ones MADE IN ENGLAND!

I have a pair of 14 hole steel toe w/red laces which are the ones I wear quite often, and a pair of 20 hole steel toe w/Black laces (For the time being) which I only wear either on VERY special occasions, or when the snow is is deep. (Like last February for example)

A new Dr. Marten store has opened up recently in Wicker Park, but I haven't been there yet.

From wikipedia:

"Märtens did not have much success selling his shoes until he met up with an old university friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, in Munich in 1947. Funck was intrigued by the new shoe design, and the two went into business that year in Seeshaupt, Germany, using discarded rubber from Luftwaffe airfields. The comfortable and durable soles were a big hit with housewives, with 80% of sales in the first decade going to women over the age of 40"

...and you can still buy Docs made in England, but they aren't called Doc Martens anymore.

Probably because combat boots have become kind of trendy at the moment. (Hayley from Paramore and Ke$ha wear them a lot). I don't know if that's popular around my area. When I was in high school I only saw like 2 other kids besides me wearing them, maybe things changed since then.

I brought mine 3 years ago. Black, 10 holes.

I don't have a pair myself, but I'm also not vehemently against them or anything. I don't think they're a skins-only thing, or a neo-Nazi thing, or anything that stupid, and I don't care how "mainstream" they get, if I wanted a pair, I'd buy 'em. I've just never seen them as being worth the price, and I've heard a lot of stories about how the quality has gone down over the years.

I'd rather just find a good, cheap pair of combats.

I've been wearing DMs for a long time; the first pair I ever got was the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever worn. I have two pairs at the moment, a ten-year-old pair of 10-hole steel-capped (which are amazing - really comfy, look great, pactically indestructible, and only cost fifty quid) and a two-year-old pair of 7-hole steelies that I got for work. The new ones are absolute crap, the quality's been bloody terrible since production moved to China. Inferior leather, badly constructed. Won't be getting any more.
