Hardcore legend Ron Reyes back in action

Tickets are moving fast for one of the more interesting shows in the coming weeks. Former Black Flag vocalist and long-time Vancouverite Ron Reyes is celebrating his 50th birthday at the Rickshaw Theatre on July 24. It’ll be the first time Reyes has performed a full set on-stage “since probably 1988”, according to organizer Doug Smith. Reyes was also the original drummer for Red Kross, and before that he was in a band called the Happy Tampon with another Black Flag alumnus, Dez Cadena.

“He’s turnin’ 50, and I said, ‘Fuck, Ron, now’s the time! One last show! Get the gang together!’ ” Smith told the Straight. The Ron Reyes Band was subsequently put together with Kevin Rose, Tony Walker, the Scramblers’ John Doe, and Scott Beadle. “They sound great. They’ve been practising for three months,” Smith added. “He’s going to perform songs from the gamut of his career, including songs by Black Flag.”

Reyes handpicked the bill, which also includes I, Braineater, the Modernettes, Little Guitar Army, and the Jolts. Smith said he’ll round out the evening with some film footage from Vancouver’s punk glory years. “At 12:30, or whatever stupid time the bands have to end because Vancouver sucks so much, we’ll just sit down in the theatre seats and drink beer and watch really cool archival shit,” he said.

yeah, I had the chance to chat a bit with him in pms sometime ago, he´s a real cool guy. Good news to know he´s back in action.
