Raspy voice

Aside from the obvious drink& smoke more how could I get a bluesy raspy voice like Tom Waits or Bob Dylan?

Did you ever try to imitate/learn the style of some old blues/jazz singers? I guess that´s what the 2 you mention did. In other words why drink water from plastic bottles when you have a fountain?

Depends wheather you want to replicate that sound naturally or artificially, if you want the natural it helps if your a bass or low baritone, practice your solfege from high to low octaves for your whole range without straining, once your comfortable hitting the lower notes in your range add some 'growl', its not an overnight solution but my old vocals teacher at choir taught us that to help us improve the lower range

If your looking for more of a quick fix

Megaphone in front of Mic is one option (as in the the vid), Charlotte (our vocalist) wants to get a more raspy voice on some of our tracks so what we've found effective is to run mic -> OD pedal (digitech bad monkey in our case) -> Mic'd Fender Champ -> PA. Our setting are bass and mids at 9 treble at 6. You dont want much drive on the pedal or you'll just get feedback around 4-6 at most.

scream, alot. not from tha belly, try from tha throat. thats what i did anyway, now when i talk i sound like an old heroin adict haha i heard somebody, and i cant remember who, stood outside everytime it was cold and screamed at the top of their lungs for as long as possible, for a movie role or a record or something, cant remember. whoever they were said they got a lot of sore throats in the process, but it worked
