Default So is this sanitary when buying meat at a grocery store?

Every time I have always bought something from the meat section from a grocery store they put it in a plastic bag or on a large sheet of white meat packing paper when weighing it.
Today I order 2lbs of bacon, she get a sheet of like 6x4 paper and proceeds to slap on the bacon, meanwhile the bacon is touching the metal scale about 2inches on each side and overhang....
To my knowledge this is unsanitary, am I wrong? When I asked her if she had a plastic bag to put it into because it is touching the scale she sort of gave me a laugh/are you serious? snicker... She asked if I wanted it, I said no, not touching a metal scale.

I went to look for the manager, not only because it seemed unsanitary but because she should have just said you are right and redid it the correct way. He was in a meeting and I found the loss prevention manager, I explained to him and he looked at me like a deer in the headlights.

Maybe I am wrong and there is no care for meat being sanitary, have you ever noticed it? Would you have accepted it? If you worked in a grocery store, what is the policy?
I don't know why I am bothered by this, maybe it was the snicker/laugh/are you serious from the employee, or the deer in the headlights look from loss prevention who couldn't find me an assistant manager and seemed to look at me like what's the problem?

the scale should be sanitized at all times except the moment what their weighing for you unless different products are on the same used scale. that is called cross-contamination. then they aught to sanitize the scale in the midst of weighing different produce. i mean you need nothing in between the scale and meat if it was properly sanitized. it might be annoying if you do sanitize the thing and get questioned working customer service. (i've been mainly back of the house and a far grander knowledge of culinary than your nemesis of now) and she is an asshole too boot. i also would question and if further inquiries leads to her rudely being absent in answers then you aught to know you will get her fired unless the whole establishment sucks. by all means help your fellow man and get rid of this poisoner. but maybe she followed procedure and is an asshole. then maybe she shouldn't be in customer service. but in actuality if you cook it properly then it should be good if it was sanitized. if not, then throw it in her face. the bacteria grows exponentially while they produce waste which we call toxins and then the bacteria might die from the heat or cold but not the leftover toxins. sorry i'm drunk. point is. the whole slicer needs to be cleaneed after anything being cut on it. there does not need any separator between anything except her hand for the slicing if it's sanitized. but she should sanitize the slicerafter that. the paper would not sanitize the slicer part or behind it. so a paper is just wrapping. sorry for the rambling.....

no! never go to a grocery store to buy meat its full of hormones and a bunch of other useless filler and they dont care for it properly. if you can try and go to a butcher shop and pay for the 100 percent angus beef. in the shop they usually cut there right for you buying the whole cow or half and they package for you and you just keep it at home. i think half a cow is about 400. but the meat will last for a year.

"I'll just go ahead and slide this cow in the freezer next to the hot pockets, and on top of the microwavable burritos... Yep! Snug fit"

I don't understand why everyone says '100% Angus beef'. Angus is a type of cattle, it's black all over. A mid-sized cow breed for meat, very nice meat as well. Apart, from mince or sausages, I don't understand why people specify the 100% Angus part. It's not like the butcher is going to chop up half a Hereford and stitch it to an Angus. haha.

But anyway, you are right. Butchers are the way to go. Better quality, better service. It may be a tad more expensive but it's worth it. Plus, most butcher are really nice and if they see that you are a returning customer after a while they start to knock back the price etc.

To the original post, It was un-saniatry but grow a pair, man. Who cares if it touches the scales a little bit? if it upsets you that much, rinse it when you get home. I reckon most people reckon germs are million times worse than they actually are. Hence, why we have a whole generation of soft pounces wrapped in cotton. Those kids get sick more often because they aren't allowed to play in the dirt and get exposed to all that fun dirt stuff to build up defensives against some nastier shit. I'm not calling you a soft pounce or anything. I understand where you are coming from, it was the staff seem rude and not too good at customer service, which probably turned a non-issue into an issue. What I'm trying to say is that, Yeah, there may have been some cross-contamination but you won't die and I'd extremely surprised if you get sick unless you are one of those aforementioned pounces. : )

I am not some germophobe, if something falls on the floor i'll pull the dog hair off and probably eat it, but raw meat, especially pork is something I don't mess around with, it isn't a metal scale they sanitize after every use, to see how little care she used makes you wonder what else she stuck on there and how long ago.
