I noticed that some people here are able to post youtube videos right here, where they can be seen on this site. But whenever I post a link to a video it takes people over to the youtube site.
Why is that?

Use the "embed" code.

hi, thanks, can you help me out a bit more?
What's the "embed" code? This is what I see: Left to right "Manage Attachments Window (paperclip)," "undo (arrow left)," "redo (arrow right)," "insert link (globe w/chain)," "remove link (chain w/red X)," "insert email link (letter with envelope)," "insert image (photo of mountain)" "Wrap quote (speak balloon)," "Wrap Code (#)" "Wrap HTML (<>)" "Wrap PHP (php on a sheet of paper)." I also see some standard editing tools to change fonts and justify text, but I do not see the "embed code." Where do I find it?

For example, on Youtube, click the 'Share' button below the video. This will show you a short URL that you can use to link to the video. But just to the right of that there's an 'Embed' button that will show you the code that you copy and paste into your forum post to show the video. You can also change the look of the video player that shows in the forum by using the options below the embed code. Most video hosting sites have similar methods for ebedding their content on other sites.

If there is no "embed" code then you can do it by right clicking and "view page source" and copying the bit of the code for the video, something like that anyway, someone else must know, i use to do it in the days before Youtube.
