so i was thinking today about the mohawk and i was wondering who was the first to wear one as a punk.. i think the native americans sported it first (i will check into this) but why the hell has it become a punk staple? maybe because it's so outrageous out of the norm in your face symbol of i don't give a fuck right?
from wiiki: The Mohawks, like many indigenous tribes in the Great Lakes region, sometimes wore a hair style in which all their hair would be cut off except for a narrow strip down the middle of the scalp from the forehead to the nape, that was approximately three finger widths across. This style was only used by warriors going off to war. The Mohawks saw their hair as a connection to the creator, and therefore grew it long. But when they went to war, they cut all or some of it off, leaving that narrow strip. They did this because they did not want the creator to go with them to war.
another from wikki.. maybe us irish fucks were the first to wear it?: The Clonycavan Man, a 2,300-year-old male bog body found near Dublin, Ireland was found to be wearing a Mohawk, held together with plant oil and pine resin imported from southwestern France or Spain.[1] The Mohawk is often thought to have been worn by the Mahican and Mohawk tribes, but the name may be a misnomer; it is believed that the Wyandot were the first Native American tribe to wear the hairstyle, but early French explorers mistook them for the Mohawk tribe. In French, the hairstyle is called Iroquois.[citation needed] During World War II, members of the Allied Airborne soldiers (specifically the 101st Airborne Division - the "Screaming Eagles") shaved their hair into Mohawks
as far as punk goes i think it was the guy from the plasmatics that did it first. he copied it from Taxi Driver or something. I donno how i know that, i think i saw him in an interview at some point.

I think it was actually Rainy of U.K. band 'Discharge' who got there first for the punks.
Of course, as previously mentioned, the native Americans and then the 2nd World War G.I.'s did wear them before the punks. But I don't think they bleached or coloured theirs. Ha!

I can't seem to locate it, but my art teacher in high school showed me various "outrageous" photographs from the 1950's, one of which a girl sporting a mohawk....... Under or somewhere near the photograph was the work "rebellion". -Possibly the earliest taht I have seen for the purpose of "rebellion"...

Actually, yeah. A lot of punk chicks play Darkon... And since I get to hit them with sticks at Darkon, that makes complete sense.

I know. I just figured I'd be a smart ass.
And whoever thought that being a punk would ever come in handy later in life? Making me own studded bracelets for all of those years helped me make studded leather armor now!

Darby Crash was the first American in the punk scene to wear a mohawk as a fashion statement, (and war paint too), supposedly, it all started after he quit the Germs and went to the U.K to visit Adam Ant, subsequently he started the "Darby Crash band" and eventually the Germs rejoined and than shortly after he killed himself.
