I absolutely agree! Their music is more of an art form, compiled by other forms of media, which makes it more interesting, and definitely intense.
But I do happen to admire the band for having the balls to address subjects such as the separation of church and state, anti-racism, and anti-corporatism. They had a message to send, which was DO IT YOURSELF, look after yourself and take some responsibility. Which in my opinion, is what punk is all about.

Look Crass were great in their attempt to carve their own path and cut through the imitations of a revolt that never really happened. The evolutionary fact that everything is essentially bullshit was a grande revelation! Most things we hold as sacred are nothing more than illusionary lies that are built up to manifest and hold our attention within a small comfort zone. This had nothing to do with their political stance because if that meant so much to them they would still be here with us gigging and recording albums. They had the great forethought to predict their own birth and death within a style that was often imitated but never duplicated correctly. Steve Arrogant from Special Duties saw the charade early and never stopped fucking with them over the issue that they were just like everybody else and no wiser. Yes they were a magnificent and important influence within their own definitive style and presentation but they themselves do admit interview after interview that idle worship of them is in vain and put to better use.

The only other band I ever felt could hold a match to Crass' dedication and self awareness were Rebel Truth from Sacramento, California. They realized while on tour that the music machine vehicle for making money was no revolution just another colourful illusion that could be put to better use.

I respect their ideals.
I only wish they were as dedicated to writing good songs as they were to their ethics. I just can't get into them.
