View Full Version : Your thoughts on Straight Edge?

In my experience quite a few people hold some animosity towards edgers. I've actually seen a kid get attacked a couple years ago because he drew the X's on his hands.

Me personally I'm considering going into it somewhat, not the weird vegan bull shit. However, after getting fucked up a couple times recently; to the point where I was sick for like a week I'm beginning to wonder what good the alcohol and drugs are really doing for me.

*shrug* what do you guys think.

You could say I'm somewhat into it. I don't smoke ciggs and rarely smoke weed. I'd say I don't but I did a few weeks ago and it may happen again, bleh. I drank a few weeks ago too. I would never call myself straightedge though. There's too many variations on what it could mean. Some people say it includes sex and then there's the vegan thing and so many other things.

Eh..I'd say as long as you're not a dick about it, like telling everyone else how to live their life, do what you want. Alcohol usually makes me sick which is why I don't drink much. I don't care if anyone else does.

Yeah Telling other people how to live their life has never been my style. And I spose I'm interpreting "straight edge" purely by it's original incantation of "No booze, no smoking, no drugs"

Kinda kills my "Brewer" namesake though, as I chose the name because me and a couple buds here brew our own beer. Spose I could switch to rootbeer, lol.

The Huntingtons were around mostly in the early/mid 90's when that boom took place. Alright band, provided you like that style of music. I do, however a lot of their songs tended to be about girls which gets annoying after awhile.

I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin, don't talk to me about being around breweries.:p

I always get them confused with The Darlingtons, and sometimes the Lillingtons. Of course, I don't really listen to much of that kind of music... Probably because it all sounds the same.

But I do like whichever one of them had that song about Donna M from the Donnas.

It's a bit more often than that, and there's a distinct area where it's most prevalent though it does tend to travel. If the conditions are just right I can smell the yeast at my home which is a considerable distance from downtown.

Yeah those three can be somewhat confusing, though I tend to remember the lillingtons best because of their relationship with Teenage Bottlerocket which I happen to like quite a bit.

The pop punk sound tends to be what gets me most the time. Like I said in my profile thingy stuff that has that "epi-fat" band vibe gets me every time. I suppose it's not exactly the most "mature" sub-genre of Music, but it's what I like (amongst other things of course) so I tend not to care a great deal what the opinion of it is.

It's just something I've been contemplating personally. I dunno that I'd be running around telling everyone I'm sxe but lately I've been taking notice of the adverse effect certain lifestyle choices are having on my life. As a result I've been also questioning just how much drugs and alcohol are actually "needed" in my life. And of course as I said above I'm not into telling anyone else how they should lead their own lives.

If you think that drugs and alcohol are having too much negative influence on your life, then by all means stop or at least modify your consumption habits - but why would you want to label yourself 'straight edge' or anything else?

There was a time when I would drink myself stupid 5 nights a week. At some point I realized that it wasn't in my best interest to keep doing that. I still drink, but I'm more aware of my consumption and look at drinking as a small part of my recreation, not the focus of it.

If you don't think you should drink, then just stop drinking. Labeling yourself based on the fact that you don't drink seems just as silly as labeling yourself based on the fact that you do. Be an individual - not an ideology.

I've never really gotten wrapped up in drug and booze. I'll partake in moderation, but that's about it. I have been on psychotropics for about 12 years now, but that's another story. I'd say if your mind and body are saying "NO" to whatever you're putting into it, then I'd listen, but that's how I operate.

Straight Edge is a good tune and an interesting idea.

I decided to not do drugs or drink during my junior and senior year of HS to sort of test myself. It wasn't hard for me at all. Plus I was a dumb idealistic punx0r hoping to change the world...and the people throwing the parties were lame-o's.

Course I wasn't technically sXe cuz I was trying to get laid every chance I got!

Anyways, as a lifestyle choice it isn't for me. I enjoy a bit of herb and brew every now and again, but I'm cool with any edger that isn't trying to push their agenda.

From what I've been reading, based purely upon your post and my own curiosity. Straight edge as a scene is no more dead than punk is.

I used to be one of those kids, who thought that the punk lifestyle just consisted of smoking and drinking, until I came acrossed Minor Threat and The Gorilla Biscuits. They showed me that there are better things in the scene to do then just lay around drugged up and boozed out. That made an everlasting impression on me. I get alotta shit from my freinds at school because I'am straight edge, but I never listen because I can be my own person and if I don't ever wanna touch a joint, why the fuck should I care? People say I'm gonna be drinking by the time I'm 30, but I don't think I will, I know I can maintain a sober lifestyle. Because I have real good self control. In it truely is hard to be SxE in high school because of the freinds I have who are pots heads and drinkers, but they care about me and respect my diffrences. So why shouldn't other punks? I meen I'd buy beer for someone but does that meen I'm gonna drink it? don't think so:)

There really wasn't any talk of straight edge making you more true to punk. In fact Straight edge is tied to hardcore than more "conventional" punk. Rio had just made a comment earlier in the thread stating that Straight edge was a dead scene. She was just saying that it's not as dead as she said previously.

Hey, thanks dude. Actually since this topic was created I did some thinking and a great deal of reading etc and decided that being straight edge and living a more positive life were what I wanted. Since I started this thread I've of course stopped all smoking, drug use, and alcohol drinking, I've lost weight, and I genuinely have a better outlook on life.

Friends were a little slow to see me changing the way I did things but all of them accept it and tend to be pretty ok with having a full time driver. I'm happier with my life now than I have been in a long time.

Me personally I'm considering going into it somewhat, not the weird vegan bull shit. However, after getting fucked up a couple times recently; to the point where I was sick for like a week I'm beginning to wonder what good the alcohol and drugs are really doing for me.

*shrug* what do you guys think.

Well, I have to say that there's nothing wrong with being straight edge. It's a personal decision and whatever floats your boat, gof for it man. I think it's fucked up that people would actually have the nerve to beat up kids over that shit. I mean, seriously. People just need to grow the fuck up and respect other people's personal decisions.

Yes. I'm sorry if I was not clear.

I agree. I don't think people should have to subscribe to a label or some sort-of absolutist culture to lead good lives. People need to simply be more responsible and know where their limit is and make better choices about it.

Reasonable jon. However, I didn't take on a label because I don't know my limits. I always knew when I was too impaired to drive or shouldn't take that next hit of acid. I took it on because the ideas were something that spoke to me. As far as arguing about subscribing to a label, honestly it doesn't bother me, labels are part of society. That's just the way the world works, people can scream "don't label me!" all they want but it happens anyway. I just choose to attach what I feel is a positive label to myself.

I'm not asking anyone to be like me or even accept it, I simply ask people to let me do my thing and I'll let you do yours.

I don't care what you do. You're not hurting anyone.

Just be careful with labels, that's all... You never know what kind-of assumptions can be made over them, especially if you're new to that label.

Ahh I've done a good deal of research on straight edge. I know there's the gang connotations starting to come out. Not too much a problem in Wisconsin where I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the vast majority want nothing more than that first legal beer. In fact I've met exactly 2 people here that have even heard of straight edge. There is more than one side to straight edge, I choose to see only the positive side. Those that feel they need to impose straight edge on others are foolish.

In my stays in Milwaukee and in other parts of the Midwest, I met quite a few kids who know what it is. Most of them were in awe that I was from MD and thus I was soooo close to DC the birthplace of OMG THE COOLEST BAND ALIVE... MINOR THREAT! OMG!!!!!

It was rather annoying to have to hear that from all of them. Ugh.

Anyway, my point is... They're out there. You just have to find them!

I'm edge myself and I never tell those how to live their lives. However someone I care about is drinking, doing drugs, or participates in sexual activities to excess I offer help and try to hope for the best. I used to drink but when I saw allot of people I cared about hurting themselves with booze, drugs, and promiscuous sex I decided all that wasn't fun anymore so I made a conscious decision to keep my body and mind clean and I felt good ever since. However, you must know that Straight Edge takes commitment and an effort to keep your attitude positive. If you can do that and be happy than its for you. PS home brewed root beer is the shit.
