View Full Version : Great time to be in Chicago

The Chicago White Sox won their division last night with a 1-0 win against Minnesota. 2 weeks ago the Cubs also clinched their division with a comfortable 9 game lead over Milwaukee. Not since 1906 have both Chicago teams won their respective divisions and I know the probability is low but the thought of an all-Chitown series is just fucking crazy. I'd have to fly up, even if I didn't have a ticket, just to soak in the atmosphere.

If that were to happen, the Sox would win, because the Cubs can never win the World Series.

I can completely understand your fear of the Cubs winning the World Series as per the famous prophet Nostradamus warned it would be a sign of the coming apocalypse. I believe the exact translation went something like this:
" When the small bear from the windy place captures the flag the end of times will be upon us."

It's not that dumb of a name when you think about the Jets for a second...
The New York Jets who play in Giants Stadium in East Ruthersferd New Jersey.

Yeah but the angels play in Anaheim, about 30 miles from LA. They have absolutely no connection to Los Angeles, except their coach is a former Dodger!

Yeah, I guess, although whenever I think of the Jets and Giants playing in Jersey it gives me a chuckle.
And seriously the Dodgers in the Series? I think that's a little wishfull thinking on your part maybe.

Yes it is....very wishful...could happen but highly unlikely....but so is the cubs in the series...

Yeah but look at the Cubs picthing, it's pretty scary when you have to go up against a team who's fourth starter (Ted Lilly) has 17 wins.

No, this is only the divisional series, they still have another round to go before their even in the Series. And as a Braves fan, I can tell you the Phillies are VERY underrated. The Dodgers have been playing good ball, but you can't honestly say that the Cubs have put up much of a fight.
edit: That is of course that if the Phillies do get past the Brewers.

So you insist that stating a team that twice defeats the BEST team, statistically, in the National League ON THE ROAD going to the World Series is "wishful thinking"?
Madness.

How much do you follow baseball Soup? This isn't that out of the normal, suprising, but not unimaginable. It's not impossible for LA to sneak in, but I'm not about to place my bets on them.
You might remember that it was just a few years ago when the Red Sox were down 0-3 in a series only to come back and win four straight against the Yankees to go on to win the World Series. The Cubs falling back two games is not necesarily a death sentance, or a sign that the Dodgers are on the road to a World Championship.

I do follow baseball and I am Yanks fan - so I'm all too familiar with the Red Sox come back.
Sneak in? Since 8/30, the Dodgers are 21 - 8. They have a 2-0 lead in a 5 game series and will be coming home for 2 games. Since 1995, only one team has dug themselves out of that hole (11 did not) - and that was the 2001 New York Yankees who were the three time defending World Series Champions - not exactly amateurs at winning in the playoffs (and they were buoyed by the whole 9-11 hoopla). The Cubs have shown no sign that they are going to crawl up off the mat - they were swept out last year as well. So I'd say the Dodgers have a 95% chance of making it past the Cubs - not exactly wishful.
As for the Phillies, the season series between the two teams was split 4 games a piece - both teams winning all the games at home. So if we were to say that is 50 / 50 - I hardly would call that wishful as well.
And I'm not a Dodgers fan, as long as the Red Sox don't win, I could give a damn who wins - though it would have been nice for the Cubs to win so their fans could stop crying over 1908...

Soup, I'm rooting for the Dodgers because as a lifelong Braves fan I have a nearlly gay love for Greg Maddux and with my team out of it, I'd love to see him get another ring. But, I doubt that the Dodgers are going to the World Series, even though it's nearly impossible for them to lose to this series.
And I still think that the Phillies could beat the Dodgers in a best of seven, regardless of that stat you gave.
You don't think the Dodgers are going to win it all this year do you?

ARRRRGGGG! My stat was that the Dodgers and Phillies were even against each other... I'm not saying the Dodgers are a lock. I'm merely saying that defeating the Cubs, and then the Phillies is highly possible.. and hence not "wishful thinking."
And now that I realize we've wasted more than 30 seconds of our lives on the semantic minutia of Major League Baseball playoff probabilities, I need to find my blow up ewe doll and get back to some real meaningful life experiences.

Oh, and as sick as it makes me, I believe the Red Sox are the odds on favorite to win it all...as long as Beckett remains healthy.

I didn't force you to talk baseball with me! What's with the ARRRRGGG!
I still think that it's wishfull thinking, but I don't think it ever said it's impossible! I just don't get why you're so upset over me calling the Dodgers playing in the World Series wishfull thinking.

ARRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! (that is the "physical manifestation" [my new favorite internet catch phrase] of my frustration).
I'm merely pointing out that the term "wishful thinking" implies long odds against a team winning. And I don't find what essentially is 50/50 odds to be anything remotely close to 'long'.
