Outgunned Border Patrol Agent Held at Gunpoint by Mexican Military
One Old Vet
August 4, 2008
A Tucson Sector Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint by the Mexican military last night south of Ajo. http://oneoldvet.com/?p=7571 Mexican military personnel crossed over the border and pointed rifles at him. Backup units arrived from the Ajo Border Patrol station, and the Mexican military personnel eventually returned to Mexico.
Once again, they come into our country, point rifles at our agents, and are allowed to return to Mexico as if nothing happened. One can only imagine the outrage if American soldiers or Border Patrol agents entered Mexico and pointed rifles at someone. Unfortunately, this sort of behavior by Mexican military personnel has been going on for years. They are never held accountable, and the United States government will undoubtedly brush this off as another case of “Oh well, they didn’t know they were in the United States.”
A few years ago the Mexican military went a step further and put a .50 calibre rifle round through the rear window of a Border Patrol agent’s patrol vehicle south of Ajo. Nothing was ever done. Nobody was ever held accountable. Even worse, nothing has changed. Particularly galling is the fact that the Mexican military often pulls these stunts in Humvees donated to them by the American taxpayers (although they were apparently on foot this time). We note that Border Patrol agents have historically driven worn-out, junk vehicles.
We will withhold further comment on this incident until we see how our leaders handle it. We don’t have much confidence in most of them. They usually just sell us out, make excuses for the Mexican military, and invite more of the same.
It is fortunate that this incident didn’t end in a very ugly gunfight.

I was reading about this last night. Apparently this happened in an area where the border is unmarked, and there were no barriers, so it was very easy to cross the border without realizing it if they weren't paying attention. I think it's reasonable to say that as a whole the Mexican military isn't that bright.
This sort of thing does happen frequently. The article I read said that the Mexican police or military had crossed the border 25 times in 2007. The US Border Patrol has also illegally crossed the border into Mexico on several occasions, but I couldn't find an official count. Apparently while the US provides detailed lists of Mexican incursions into the US, it doesn't publish counts of US incursions into Mexico - officially they just say it's a lot less.
This guy's comment that 'One can only imagine the outrage if American soldiers or Border Patrol agents entered Mexico and pointed rifles at someone' obviously overlooks the fact that this does happen (although I am inclined to believe it happens rarely).
While I have no love or trust for the Mexican military and police, it's difficult to say if thhis was intentional, or just an act of stupidity. I could go either way.

Yea.......I'm sure that it goes both ways, but firing upon the border patrol with heavier machinery on numerous occasions (if it is accurate) without anything being done about it is crazy! I think the looseness of this kind of coincides with eventually breaking down borders for a possible North American Union.

They never said they were fired upon (at least in this instance), or that there was 'heavier machinery'. The claim that the Border Patrol uses 'worn out junk vehicles' is bull - I've seen plenty of border patrol vehicles, and my brother is a border patrol agent in AZ, and they don't fit that description (although I'm sure they have plenty of varying age and condition).
With all this fuss over immigration and the need to spend millions on sealing the border, this sort of thing could have been avoided with nothing more than a picket fence or a sign.

I was referring to the "couple of years ago" reference when a round was put through the window.....but yea, not in this instance. What I meant by heavier machinary was the Hummer reference.
At any rate.......LOL.........a fence or sign may at least give more of a distinction where each country begins/ends!

Actually, let me correct my previous post about not firing upon the border patrol - I just re-read the original message and remembered the .50 caliber round comment. Can't really comment because I haven't heard any particulars. Were they physically in the US at the time, or did they fire across the border? Were they aiming for something on the US side, or was it a stray bullet? Hard to say without details. Stupidity or bad aim isn't an excuse, but it might provide some explaination.

A simple misunderstanding wouldn't be a problem if it didn't involve shooting, or guns being pointed.
ever been on the border, its vast, and if you die, they' probably won't find you there for days. BP agents walk around with a pistol ill suited for the spacious open terrain, mostly alone, or sometimes in pairs.
