i love the music and the people. i dont care how disgusting they are. most of them are freakin comedians and they keep me entertained. I remember one time i was at the beach in Ocean Beach and a couple of friends and i were just sitting smoking and some crusty came up drunk as fuck and pissed off the cliffs right in front of us. He almost fell off the cliff a couple times and his friends were all sitting a few meters from us cheering him on. I gave them some food because they made me happy.

screw crusties. most of 'em are dumb rich kids who can go home AT ANY TIME. If not, mentally unstable to the point its hard to have a coherent conversation. crust music is pretty forgettable.
that said, if you actually lose your job, or get kicked out of your house/apartment, not because of any real fault of your own, I do sympathize with you, cause that can happen to anyone. If your living on the street cause you HAVE to, I'll put up with you. But if your just doing it to fit in with a scene, then your as low as the dirt you sleep in. Again crust music is otherwise forgettable.
The entire time I've been involved in the punk scene I've always had a job(most of which sucked), and payed my own way. I was pretty sympathetic to crust my first few days around the scene, but now, just fuck 'em.
edit: if you got a place to stay with running water and still don't bathe, you should be hosed down before your allowed into a show.

I also used to hang out with some squatters at TITS (Thursday in the Square in Buffalo, NY), and they were cool too.

Crusties along with various other punkrocker types seem to enjoy faking poverty. I always thought this was stupid. The music is horrible they are just angrier dumber versions of hippies with worse music, If I didn't see it for myself I wouldn't believe it was possible.

just because someone wasnt born into a poor environment, doesnt mean they are faking poverty.. even if someone comes from a middle class/upper middle class backround, doesnt mean that they are faking anything. if they come from that kind of family and they realize that they dont want to be like that, than who is anyone to say that they cant do what they want to do with their life. i hate it when people think that just because someone may come from that kind of backround, that they should be ridiculed or shunned because of it. if they are true to what they stand for, than who gives a fuck.

I agree. There are kids that come from a background of money but don't agree with the values. Some people prefer dumpster diving and couch surfing to Gucci and Prada. Everyone has the right to their own values and life choices. I don't agree that crusties are quite the same as hippies. The smell might be the same, but the sentiment is different. I am not a fan of the music but whatever.....

It does to me. I have been looked down upon by "crusties" for being too rich only to find out that finacially their parents were in a much better situation than mine. This is when I was 15-16 and still first into punk. Just the people I encountered not every one you've ever heard of.

Well that is were the stupid part is they shouldn't be ashamed that their parents or whoever works and makes an honest living. It's quite honorable to earn what you have.

I agree they shouldn't be shunned or ridiculed. I was referring to kids who in fact have money but act poor or like they don't have money in order to fit in with the other "crusties" how the fuck is that being true to anything? You can have money and be crusty with the clothes, ideals, and personal values but why lie about your situation?

Maybe you don't know many crust punks over the age of 18, but that doesn't mean it's universal rule. Most of the crusties I know are over 18. To me this says that their are people involved in crust of all ages. Plus their are tons of people under the age of 18 who don't have their parents' support, for what ever reason.

Nah, if I loved underage girls, I'd admit it.
I freely admit to dating and sleeping with a shitload of 19 year-olds. I've been doing that since I was 17. I don't care. I'm 27 and right now, I'm in a relationship with a 19 year-old. When I was 25, the same thing happened. Between then and now, I slept with at least three other 19 year-olds.

just get it over with shave your head and become a skin already. At this point you might as well.
There is some truth to this though. Its not the fact that they're from middle class/upper class backgrounds, its the fact they could allievate their situation by simply trying. Its the fact a good portion of them could go back at any time, and most do within 1-2 years.
The rest of us, our actions have long lasting consequences.

I'm all for working hard and taking care of yourself, but do you really think that these kids are like this because they don't want to try? I know that for a lot of people, it's just an attitude about not caring about the norms of establishment that include things like money and possessions. They care about getting drunk, going to shows, being with friends, listening to music, standing up for their beliefs, not being part of the system. They want to travel and have fun and not have cares in the world. They don't want to go home. That's not for me, but I can see the appeal.

there a plenty of kids who get fucked by the system, and for them I feel bad. (isn't that what I've been screaming all along if you care to read my rants). But I won't denying there are plenty of kids who think its all a game or something, and even have the nerve to mock those who had to work just to keep their head above. I won't deny what I've seen with my own eyes. To accept them would be to further spit in the face of everyone who's been in a same situation as me, but worked harder than me to get less, which numbers more good people than I've met in crusties.
For example, if I lived the crust life today, there wouldn't be a soul in the world who'd help me back if I decided I had enough. I'd be further at the mercy of society. This is a truth for many many people.
I'm not materialistic. But if I wanna go to shows, keep my freinds, and get drunk, I need to work. I don't have a free ride.
Mabey I should be the one shopping for a bomber jacket....

I had no idea my house mates were beating me up all the time. What I find I ironic is that in a house full of crusties that it's the kid who's into hardcore that's always late with their share of the rent and bills money because he spent it all on booze, drugs and cigarettes. Thankfully none of my housemates are into generalizations as much as certain members of these forums, because I'd probably get annoyed with them constantly pointing out that I don't live up to my steretype or how ironic it is that I'm the token drunk of the house.

I've never seen the statement "I've never met one, but...." so many times. Worst of all, even though they admit they've never seen one, or dont know any, or only know one, or whatever they still have an unshakable opinion of them.
If you've never met a crustie, or a skinhead, or whatever subculture you want to make your sweeping generalizations about.... GO OUTSIDE!!! get off your mom's/girlfriend's computer and go to a show. seriously. or visit a different town or something. Its just pitiful. I'm from central texas, which is pretty much a cultural wasteland, and the last place on earth one would think to look for a crustie, skin, or streepunk, (although i'm surprised, they seem to be everywhere if you're willing to look hard enough) and i've managed to meet more than my fair share of all these subcultures. i can't fathom it being that difficult to find new interesting people. Some of you people are just so mindless and bigoted. Makes me wonder if this is punkrockers.com, or shut-ins.com

You make it seem like the rest of us wanted to be part of the system, or place great value in material possession.
None of us wanna be part of the system, we all gotta work if we wanna eat, get drunk, or go to shows. Some dumb rich kids with very lax parents can skate the system only cause they've got parents who can bail 'em out of trouble. The rest of us don't.
Again, those who got tossed out of the system, for the various senseless reasons the system has for things, I can relate, and accept. Those who do it to prove how fucking cool they are can go screw.

pfffttt.... which fantasy world is that? I don't need a lecture on how we all have to work. Perhaps you could have given that to me at 16 before I got a job and moved out? You assume that everyone that doesn't live the lifestyle that you do must be a rich kid who is just out to play a game.
no, I just go by what people tell me. I don't know how you grow up, but you seem to have this notion you can live like a crusty without someone on the outside supporting you. I'm pretty damn sure your not even close to the type of person I was talking about.
You explicitly told me the argument wasn't those with troubles, but just those who perfectly capable of functioning normally, just chose not to, and leach off people. It makes no sense why anyone who's had to work a hard day just to eat, would somehow accept these people. Its an insult.

I grew up poor and I still am poor. That doesn't make me care how other people live though. My parents weren't rich and no one gives me hand outs, but I am not angry at the kids that do live that way. It doesn't affect me in any way. And well, people give dirty kids that are out panhandling money every day, so obviously someone is accepting of it.

Nobody is forcing anybody else to financially support crust punks. When you see a punk pan handling for booze you have a choice to either give them money or not to. Nobody is leaching so much as somebody is choosing to share. If they're on welfare, so what? There are lost of things my tax dollars go towards that I don't support, but thems the breaks. I however have yet to meet many crusties who are on welfare, being anarchists and all.

I love crust punk music, Umm And I've been told I dress like a crust punk...
I useally wear torn jeans that are black with bleach on them, I like the look of it, I dont wear them to be cool. Back when I was 12 My dad gave me a pair of Light blue/ bleached torn jeans, and I just fell In love with that look... and to this day I bleach most of my jeans, I just love the look of it..
For the most part my Immediate family is considered poor, Where as my mom's side is upper class, and are fucking uptight selfish jerks...So none of us keep in touch with them.
I've been homeless before, Ran away at the age of 15 or 16, right after my mom had left us, cause my dad just started taking everything out on me and my bro. It was'nt bad on my bro, cause he was a Sponcered skateboarder, so he was kinda the favorite. I Ended up being on the streets for a few nights and then a friend offered me a place to stay. It was a backroom. It was honestly a good life exsperiance. Few other punks stayed ther, people came and went, But the ones who stayed on a dailey basis were me, this kid nick who was Into punk/rave...A Nazi bonehead, some Goth chick and This huge Blackbelt drug lord type dude. Anyways I did'nt stay for free even though it was offered, Did alot of work around the property, and ran favors for people. I stayed for about 3-4 weeks maybe longer. Now me and nick were considered to be the punkers, and some of the people ther thought we were theifs and just druggie's..Which is the funny thing. I had no job so I continued to do whatever chore need to be done, and Nick who had a job paid rent and also did work around the place. The Bonehead nazi, Had a job, Never paid any rent, did any work, didnt do shit except stir up problems.
In the end, alot of my stuff was stolen, from what I was told by the host, the bonehead stole from everyone ther. And shit just got worse and worse so I left and went back home, nothing had gotten any better.
I learned alot about people while staying ther, alot of the people I met were pretty cool except the bonehead.
That exsperiance taught me to appreciate the home I did have even though it was misrable ther. I knew I was safe ther for the most part though.
Anyways most people call me a crust punk, But Im not a begger, I dont do drugs, and I dont smell. I dont own a T.V anymore, and the comp I have was Bought with money I earned while being a Union Laborer. Yea I look like a damn Bum, But Im not one.
I have met plenty of other crust punks and ther good people, the ones I have met arnt beggers and they didnt really smell other then the smell of whiskey, and the one that were homeless, Made money doing odd jobs,to try and get back on ther feet and some that I have met did charity work even though they were homeless.
So I dont Understand where anyone here get's off saying that crustie's are just dumb dirty rude people.
Btw Im 20 now, Have no job, But plan on getting into the sheet metal union, I still dress like a damn Bum, even when I was a Union laberer while building kaiser ( 2 years ago ) I dressed in the same bleached torn jeans that I wear today, They have value to me that No one else can see =P
I have met cool people in all of the sub cultures I have come across, and the people I dis-liked were also dis-liked by said cuture, May it be the Punk, ravers, Goths, and satenist....Ther are allways gonna be people in every culture that are just down right stupid jack ass's and theive's it has nothing to do with culture, it has to do with that single person's mentality

just because someone wasnt born into a poor environment, doesnt mean they are faking poverty.. even if someone comes from a middle class/upper middle class backround, doesnt mean that they are faking anything. if they come from that kind of family and they realize that they dont want to be like that, than who is anyone to say that they cant do what they want to do with their life. i hate it when people think that just because someone may come from that kind of backround, that they should be ridiculed or shunned because of it. if they are true to what they stand for, than who gives a fuck.

I believe the only explanation for this can be that these kids are involved highly scientific interdisciplinary studies of crust. It's cool enough the way they tackle a sociological issue from an anthropological standpoint, but the in depth analysis of the psychological profile of a crust punk and the various case studies are what really blow me away.

no i see them a lot, just not at punk shows. i live in a really ghetto neighborhood. all of the projects in chicago are getting torn down and they've been moving to my town.

Personally,I don't give a damn who you are and how you live. You've got the right to choose and the right to lose.Crusties have tried preaching me their bullshit propoghanda about beating the system is not working, sleeping under bridges, and not supporting major corporations. To me,none of this makes any sense. The system is happy to see you jobless you fit right into their stereotypes they made for you. Living with mommy and daddy or living with the rats doesn't make you a rebel it makes you a bum.Not eating at Mcdonalds and buying things from other major franchises doesn't put a dent in the economy nor their pockets at all,or at least so minute they don't give a damn that's just chump change.I can't stand crusty music because it sounds too metal grindcore just sounds like shit to me.You wanted my opinion you got it.

lol its funny how you guys talk down about people that you consider as something as negative as the things that you consider almost blasphemous to our society. from what ive read, the only people that dont talk down about crusties are the people that are actually friends with them or have socialized with them to a reasonable extent. how are you going to gather them all up in one generalization when you dont even understand who that person is and why they choose to live the life that they do. why does anything matter when the life they live is divided by most of the restrictions and "morals" that the people that live around us abide by. sure people are going to disagree with me, especially if they've had their own bad experiences with crusties, but from my experience with people that live that lifestyle, they are the only people i would want to be around...

I like crust, but very few seems to think that bands like Mob 47, Anti Cimex, Discharge, Terveet Kädet, Siege is but they are not at all crust bands but hardcore bands..crust is much more metallic/grindish/harsher vocals, bands I'd consider crust would be Skitsystem, Extreme Noise Terror, Deviated Instinct, Dystopia, No Security, Antischism, Hellshock..

UP THE CRUST!! crust isn't about purposely living on the streets and not bathing. Its about rejecting the norms of capitalist and authoritarian society and creating an alternative. Crust is just a more aggressive form of anarcho punk with a more aggressive version of the ideology that comes with it. I'm a crusty and no i'm in no way shape or form rich or mentally unstable. instead of begging for spare change i either dumpster food, go to really really free markets for clothes and luxury items, or shoplift from large corporate chains. And i do have a small income from playing with my band and a online sex toy business with my girlfriend. I reject the capitalist system the best I can but unfortunately currency is needed to get by in this world but hopefully not for much longer but it is good that i have a back up in place as opposed to being at the mercy of rich hipsters, yuppies, and tourists, in NYC. I also do my best to resist paying taxes. and yes i enjoy bathing once and awhile and no i don't go out of my way to be smelly. I hope I cleared the many misconceptions of crust that many of you share on this forum.

Good job. Thanks for raising the prices for every hard-working American and lower and middle-class person that shops at such places. You're really making a difference there.
No, really, you are... By helping other people end up paying more for their clothing and other stuff.
im highly doubt that loses from shoplifting play any significant part in inflation. if you can scare up any evidence of that ill eat my hat.

One can find good people everywhere, I'm sure in crust 2 BUT I don't get this guy, that lifestyle-fighting the authorities and the capitalist society by shoplifting and selling sex toys-what irony, where are u getting with that? Try working with the financial aspect of a company. They pass losses on directly to consumers. They use loss figures to adjust prices all of the time. Whether the loss be from theft, simply loss, or merchandise getting destroyed, it is used to adjust prices. They enjoy making a base profit on something, and if their profits go below that level, they will end up raising the prices.
Furthermore, more shoplifting means more of a need for security... Paying more security means less profit... So again, raising the prices of merchandise to make up for it.
Edit: Also, try google, typing it in after posting this came up with a ton of results.
http://fycs.ifas.ufl.edu/newsletters/H07.htm (a good one by a professor)
i dont buy his arguments of 15% coverage for shoplifting alone. especially after he goes on to list 4 or so other causes with out applying any coverage to them. the over marks would be insane.
and even if that was correct, it would only be a 15% raise on items that were actually suitable to shoptift, desirable enough to to want and expencive enough not to simply purchase.
id bet its actually like a 1% increase in total.

Having worked in retail management, I can say that it's more than 1%. 3-5% comes directly from actual shoplifting losses, up to 10% more comes from having to hire people to watch for shoplifting (and getting cameras, etc installed - even if it's before a place opens - the price gets passed down).
If people didn't shoplift, things would be cheaper all over.

in a small way yes but the internet can be exploited to fight the capitalist system through the free exchange of ideas that can not be found anywhere else.
cameras and the likes are a 1 off measure. in the face of the gross profits of large companies it must be practically nothing.
hiring security is more costly, i'll give you that. id still like to see proof of that handy 10% which covers your sources number tho.
either way. im still pro shoplifting. in its self its a little revoltionary act and if everyone did it it would go along way to disrupting unbalanced wealth distrobution. its pretty glib i know, but i find it hard to care about a few peoples pennies when there's so much more that could be achieved by everyone just pinching loads of shit.

that said, if you actually lose your job, or get kicked out of your house/apartment, not because of any real fault of your own, I do sympathize with you, cause that can happen to anyone. If your living on the street cause you HAVE to, I'll put up with you. But if your just doing it to fit in with a scene, then your as low as the dirt you sleep in. Again crust music is otherwise forgettable.
Living homeless and to 'out of it' to understand the music genre 'crust' i was introduced to crust culture and was (shocked) i never saw any of these people on the street near the club where the crusts gather, the neighborhoods around this area had no scene people that could be identified by me on the street anywhere.
This statement above seems reasonable.

Something that doesn't follow in sequence.
Like, if everybody was talking about how smart they were, and somebody piped in "I like purple, it's a good color".
Also, it's a fallacy in logical argument, one which is most-related to slipper-slope. Such as, "if we allow the gays to get married, people will want to have have polygamous marriages horses and goats!"
