I live in a tiny town in Texas where there really aren't ANY punx or skins to be found...alot of people don't recognize it and think I'm the anti-christi or some kinda nut-job...I really don't mind though because since people are intolerant towards punks its just so much more obscene and keeps punkrock a real fucking threat. In Contrast, I wish there were more kids into the subculture because it's fun to party with more people and it's damn near impossible to form a band here. I'm gonna work in the hospital so I can raise the money to start a distro and venue to kick up our scene another notch...It seems like everybody here just pisses and moans about shit not changing and never actually gets off their ass...as D.O.A said it best: "SOMETHINGS GOT TO CHANGE"

I'm so out of touch with mainstream media that I'd probably have to start in 98' and work my way up to the present. Sometimes it gets annoying when somebody tells me about a song or a tv show that I've only vaguely heard about and they just can't believe I don't know what it's all about. Last pop-culture item I picked up was a song called super-soak that hoe. Or at least that is what the main chorus was, still I have no idea who the artist is or when it came out. Hell I thought Marilyn Manson was still all the rage.

Why? You're not that "out there" from what I've seen or experienced in the time I've been on the same forums as you. You should easily be able to pick up mainstream girls.

I've avoided hooking up with/dating punk girls for quite some years, personally. You can do it, too.

Unless things are magically THAT different in the UK.

If you are disgusted with mainstream music, just follow this simple process..

Start your own band and play in your backyard.

Gain some experience performing and songwriting.

Then get popular and go mainstream yourself.

Watch in horror as the underground rails against you.

I pretty much consider punk a pop culture movement. It certainly isn't classical or high culture.

I think that punk being pop culture depends on where you are from. If it's an area that is rife with punks, then it's going to become "more acceptable" to some degree, or at least expected. Where I'm from, seeing a punk is like some kind of alien sighting, or I've grown three heads and just haven't noticed it yet (that would explain a lot).

Pop Culture is whats wrong with America. Pop Culture is propigated by the RIAA and MPAA as mind control for our youth. They've instituted their own clique system based on a hierachy which keeps the most likely to not follow their instructions on the bottom. They use the threat of social isolation as a tool of fear to keep teenagers buying over-inflated prices of records and clothes they can't afford, and political messages.

The Rolling Stone will rant on and on about big corporations ruining America, but they neglect the worst offenders, simply cause thats who pays them. I am sick and tired of punk being diverted as a political lobby for politicians who frankly hate the real punks, fashion designers, posers, and pop culture teenybobber whores.

Yet the same group of people are responsible for demonizing the way we look at hackers, going after 12-year-olds file sharing, putting it on par with grand theft auto at times, theese are the ones quickly snuffing the real heros and revolutionaries of today, while feeding us the same watered down BULLSHIT.

We get our phones monitored, we get out bandwith slashed, we get our CD prices fixed, and we get accused of ruining their industry built on bulleying lies, and fear. With all the screams at halliburton, you think anyone would question this happy horse shit, no?

Seriously, various sub-culture groups get charged with most of society's ills while we know the biggest druggies, the most likely to commit random violent crimes, the most likely to have no consideration for either society or their fellow man are the pop-culture whores. Yet they've got an army to vouch for their character as good people.

Fuck pop culture. Its a prime example of how America is falling apart from the inside.

edit: in before the college hippy, goody two shoes "punks" call me a nutcase...

look around you and tell me I'm wrong. How much prison time did paris hilton serve, what about kieth sutherland, what about lindsey lohan, what about the hordes and hordes of celebrities getting out on mere fractions of their sentences. Drugs, drunk driving, some assaults. This is often emulated by the "in crowd" of young followers. Has there ever been a mass investigation into this? no, but everytime they need to make the case of punk being morally deviant, for doing what we all know goes on in mainstream society, its assholes like me(and probably a lot of you), who take the fall.

I'm sorry, I'm 25 and things never changed. Long before I ever got into punk, I lived in a who viewed intelligence as a trouble.

This fine nation had a 15 year old who built a nuclear reactor in his parents garage FROM SCRATCH, do you know what happened to him??

He was considered a brigand and an outlaw by the authorities. You'd think 7 years after than incident we'd have one hell of a nuclear scientist, instead he dropped out of county college at age 22 and joined the marine corps. In my personal life I have also seen some of the best and brightest in the gutter, because they where STUFFED in the gutter, while merely average yet highly obedient people are now made to be the "smart people". We wonder why America is slipping in terms of technology against the world. You can call it coincidence, but it looks a lot like a system that failed.

Why hasn't the SAT test measured IQ beyond average for the last 12 years?

This society has been so damn interested in enforcing obedience in mediocracy, holding up failed idiots for social reasons, we're stalling, and it shows. College is starting to become a place to rubber stamp a seal of a new class status rather than any sort of real merit. Its becoming nothing more than a finishing school where your taught to sound important, make anything no matter how logically flawed sound like a good argument, and allowed to use your natural ability to think shunned in high school, and of course, be thoroughly indoctrinated with whatever the politics of the day are.

How come kids who are smart enough to program in high school get routinely interrogated and looked at as suspect simply for being smart, and having an interest in learning?

Thats why we're all here isn't it. Punks a reaction, and angry reaction. If pop culture wasn't so fucked up I'd probably be part of it. I just can't bring myself to do it. The reason I am still a punk rocker at 25 years old is pretty different than the reason I started at 16. I'm still here because I refuse to be associated with pop culture. What I posted in this thread is the mere tip of the ice berg.

Tell me I'm wrong, give me some answer you got in a text book, filled with rhetoric and some semantical bullshit. I'm gonna draw this line in the sand for all the little kids who are half my size who catch shit from college trendwhores who where never part of this to begin with, who just needed a label until they got a job.

what you said makes perfect sense to me. all these designers and pop artists want is the money the more they brainwash kids with trends and social cliques the more profit they make. they compete against each other to get the most amount of followers. paris hilton doesn't even have a career her job is just to look cute in front of the camera and she gets her sentence short but the average person who works hard to feed himself does more time. this system IS fucked up.

Pop culture IS America. Without pop culture, we'd have no cultural identity.

I would never...

They do? That's a new one. Sounds kind-of paranoid to me...

The reason I am still a punk rocker at 25 years old is pretty different than the reason I started at 16.
From now on, when you talk about what or isn't punk or you try to talk to me about punk, I'm just going to laugh. I thought for sure that you were in your 30s and have been doing "the punk thing" forever. I've got you beat by a shitload. Wow.
