Let's try this again...
Dolphin appears to guide whales to sea
By RAY LILLEY, Associated Press Writer
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Most days, Moko the bottlenosed dolphin swims playfully with humans at a New Zealand beach. But this week, it seems, Moko found his mojo. Witnesses described Wednesday how they saw the dolphin swim up to two stranded whales and guide them to safety.
Before Moko arrived, rescue workers had been working for more than an hour to get two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and her calf, back out to sea after they were stranded Monday off Mahia Beach, said Conservation Department worker Malcolm Smith.
But Smith said the whales restranded themselves four times on a sandbar slightly out to sea from the beach, about 300 miles northeast of the capital, Wellington. It looked likely they would have to be euthanized to prevent a prolonged death, he said.
"They kept getting disorientated and stranding again," said Smith, who was among the rescuers. "They obviously couldn't find their way back past (the sandbar) to the sea."
Then along came Moko, who approached the whales and appeared to lead them as they swam 200 yards along the beach and through a channel out to the open sea.
"Moko just came flying through the water and pushed in between us and the whales," Juanita Symes, another rescuer, told The Associated Press. "She got them to head toward the hill, where the channel is. It was an amazing experience."
Anton van Helden, a marine mammals expert at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, said the reports of Moko's rescue were "fantastic" but believable because the dolphins have "a great capacity for altruistic activities."
These included evidence of dolphins protecting people lost at sea, and their playfulness with other animals.
"But it's the first time I've heard of an inter-species refloating technique. I think that's wonderful," said van Helden, who was not involved in the rescue but spoke afterward to Smith.

seriously, if dolphins evolved to live on land, they'd be the dominant species (or at least the most intelligent)

Nope.
It's the eight-armed animals you have to watch out for.
On Discovery there was this show about the most-likely course of evolution, and in billions of years, they'll run our planet.

I don't trust any animal with more than 4 legs. And by that I mean, I am absolutely terrified of any animal with more than 4 legs. I still run away and tell an adult when I see a spider.

in billions of years, our planet will be consumed by the ever expanding sun. so I don't think we need to worry about spiders just yet

Ocean creatures scare me. I only swim in natural bodies of water. If I am not eaten by a shark, I might be attacked by some squid man like Pirates of the Carribean style. The ocean is just not to be messed with :|

^what sea creature spooks you the most? I'm deeply afraid of eels, but I also share a general fear of sea life. We have something quirky in common.

gosh, most of them. I strongly dislike the octopus, too many legs. But the creepiest seem to be the ones that you see on those science discovery deep sea shows. They look almost alien or prehistoric.

not exactly, but I had a little incident where I got knocked out by waves in Santa Cruz when I was a kid, you know when you are little and you run towards the surf then run back on the beach when the waves get big? I didn't run back. I still have bad dreams about that. My nightmares are more of the psycho killer variety.
You?

^Man I have some fucked up dreams, let me tell yah. If I have dreams about the ocean, I'm usually not in the water luckily, and if I am, I wake myself up before I die in my sleep. I have psycho killer dreams too, sometimes I'm even the psycho killer. My mind is a breeding ground for the macabre, so the gruesome or perverse nature of my dreams know no bounds. I lucid dream also though, so if I want out, or want to change the scenery I can.

That's actually really cool. You must have a great imagination. I obviously have trust issues, my dreams are always about someone trying to kill me and the people that I care about not trying to save me. I don't know how to wake myself up though.

^tell me about it -- I have chronic depression, and anxiety is a common place too. I'm just glad that I don't have panic attacks anymore, I'd rather have bamboo shoved under my finger nails than deal with that shit again.

yeah, I am the only one in my family (including my kid) who doesn't have bipolar or anxiety disorder. But maybe that's because I tend to self medicate.

^I use to self medicate, actually the incident that brought on my first onslaught of severe emotional disturbance was related to some hash I smoked. Well, luckily now my symptoms are lessened greatly and not destroying my life like they once were, I still have my days though.

i still get my panic attacks. they started happening only last year though. i delt with depression before that.
My last panic attack was at a drum circle at the the beach. I broke down and started crying so i had to leave all the people and have some alone time on the beach. this was no bueno because im afraid of the ocean. This happened about... 2 weeks ago?
