How the fuck do we expect to go on as working class fuck bags when no one in our work force understands us. I'm a tradesman and I get stuck with all these hick mother fuckers making comments and looking at me sideways like I'm any less of a man or like I can't do my job cause I like a certain lifestyle and music genre that fuels it!!!
These men and women are children.
How do you feel about this and your own experience with school and work or any other place you have to deal with your difference creating unneeded dispute!!!

this has never really been a problem for me, ive had the odd joke made about me but it was all in good fun. anytime someone has given me a hard time i make it a point to do twice as much work as them so they look like a lazy bastard. but usually at all jobs ive worked ive tried to out work everyone because then i know if i fuck up a bunch i'll still have a job if im the hardest worker haha

This hasn't happened to me much either. At school, I was lucky. I was 14 in 1977, so when I first got into punk and pretty much the whole school was either into punk or pretending to be, to piss the teachers off.
I worked in an office and had to wear a suit while at work. People where more jealous or intrigued by my lifestyle outside work, than anything. Every monday I'd have stories about wild gigs, sex behind a punk club, drug taking, fist fights etc etc where as all they seemed to do was watch TV all weekend.
I worked in a Factory where I could dress as I liked and people where mostly cool with me. I used to go to the pub every friday lunchtime after work (the factory would shut half day fridays) and have a right good piss up with my workmates. They where straights, ravers, bikers, football fans etc etc just ordinary folks.

Yeah I'm pretty much treated as a joke at work when I have coloured hair.
I get "Hey Sloth, take your hat off and show us what colour your hair is today" a lot. I usually just flip them the bird or tell them I'm not there for their amusement.
Once when I had pink hair the pay lady at work told her daughter it was "just like My Little Pony" ugh... I've never lived that one down LOL

That is pretty funny...
When I am at work, I'm all business. I work hard to take the best care of my patients that I possibly can. Even though many people there know where my interests lie- I don't hear too much about it. I mostly get odd looks when I run into people I work with outside of the workplace. At work I'm in scrubs. When off- I'm in clothes my coworkers wouldn't be caught dead in.
I happened to pass my Assistant Director of Nursing on the interstate with the music cranked up & the windows down last week. I was listening to Civil Disobedience. Been getting funny looks from her every since. Haha!
i work at a kindergarten, the kids loves me and the other leaders.

I guess it's kind of like that other thread about being harassed in public for looking punk. It all depends on where you live. I am lucky to live in a big city that is full of diversity. Tattoos, piercings, dyed hair.... all pretty commonplace. That has it's pros and cons.... But for the most part, it's great. It makes it easier to get a job without being expected to change anything about yourself.

I had a issue like this in school. The teacher was going around asking people what they are into and I said I was into punk rock so the rest of the semester he would find a way of bring that up to embarrass me.

Don't get me wrong, I've met a lot of cool Canadians, but I've also had an issue with a certain Canadian at work... oddly enough, in South Korea. Keep in mind, I have such an extreme reputation at home that I don't even bother to look for work here; if I do a job search I go overseas where (in theory) no one knows who I am. So anyways, I did what I could last year when I got this teaching job, completely toned down my appearance and got as close as I could to normal. Apparently, I am incapable of pulling off a "normal" persona, because my work mate suspected something from the second I met her and made comments about how she "hates when people come to South Korea to re-invent themselves". From there on, she made my life at work as hellish as possible while helping the girl who had come the same damn day as me adjust to work and stuff. Pissed me off so badly. I'd also do stuff like wearing a gothic lolita dress out on the town because bloody hell, it's Asia, if I'm not going to wear my lolita dress here, where the hell is it appropriate? And of course the locals approved, but not that dickweed I had to work with. AFTER I got fired (2 months into a year contract), I found out she had figured out that I had squatted in London and made the papers doing it. She proceeded to tell everyone running the school, the kids parents, etc. Like it makes a difference in my ability to teach if I did that? Whatever. I have no regrets concerning my choices in life since no matter what it seems to be a non-stop party. Now I'm in the process of getting another job over seas and still have anxiety about not being accepted even though everyone in Korea seemed to like me except for like 2 people.

canadains are just like people anywhere else, theres good people and theres asshole, and while the stereotype is that all canadians are laid back and easy going, thats not the truth for a lot of people. its like the stereotype for americans are that they're fat, ignorant slobs, but i know thats not the truth because ive met some skinny, open minded americans before haha...dont let those people get you down, theres always gonna be people who think they're better than you and will try and bring you down to their level. the best thing to do is to just pay no attention to it and not let it bother you, or act like it doesnt bother you and deal with the frustration at another time when they're not around. the people who judge you based on what you wear arent worth worrying about. the people who mind dont matter and the people who matter dont mind, i know its a cliche, overused saying but theres a lot of truth in it

I tend to dress pretty "normal" so I very rarely get any shit (not that i'm employed) though if I go out at night and wear makeup (just eyeliner and sometimes lipstick) I get alot of shit from people for it, usually homophobic stuff, calling me a poof and that. I never really let it get to me, though, I can handle the hate.

I get ripped on constantly, all day, every day. today its about my green mohawk and tomorrow it'll be about my tattoos or my Jeep. Everyfuckingday. Good thing I'm pretty good at my job or else I'd just say Fuck it all.
Oh, and I'm also the only musician out of 70 employees! That startled me at first, no one to discuss music with. Nobody knows what punk is and the ones that have heard my band think we're metal.... grrr.

That was like when I was at college
"Oh you're in a band?"
"Yeah, do you play anything?"
"No, I used to play guitar when I was a kid though. What sort of music do you play"
"Sort of punky stuff mainly."
"Oh, you mean like Paramore"
"No. Not like Paramore"
"Well who then?"
"Uh, The Stooges, The New York Dolls, The Damned, stuff like that."
"I don't know any of those bands, do you like Billy Talent?"
"No. No I don't."

I dress flamboyantly as fuck and am also very "vibrant" in conversation. I'm a nice and respectful guy so folks like me a lot, but if someone gives me a weird look I give them this ridiculous death glare or something. Plus I'm big (6'2, 200lbs) so people don't really fuck with me in the first place.

I work in Northern BC, Canada, and get a lot of looks when I deliver PT parts to mills and such cause my hawk hangs out the bottom of my hard hat. But the guys I actually work with at the store don't give a shit. They know I'm into punk, and I've run in to one of them at the grocery store, wearing my vest, and patched up pants. Never really heard anything at work about it though. Usually at work though, I'm dressed in work jeans, or dickies and plain shirts that I don't mind wrecking, so its not like I look like a punk there. Actually come to think of it, my boss let me take off early a couple weeks ago so I could get to the venue early enough at a show I was playing out of town.

I'm a gymnastics coach and the kids love when I dye my hair. My bosses are super cool with tattoos and such also, as long as I keep myself fairly clean looking.
I don't wear much weird shit outside of work anyway. It's too hot in Arizona for jackets, and I prefer jeans and tennis shoes over anything else.

Fuck, I was just gonna make the same thread! I am plagued with ignorant hickabillys. It frustrates the hell out of me, all I listen to is loud mouth uncouth idiots talk about hunting, guns, and thier trucks. I dress pretty plain but have a Lot of tatts and piercings and the fucks at work always make comments about SOMETHING! And out and about they stare in a rude mannor. I can't stand these sheltered ignorant fucks and can not wait to get back home to socal

I've been trying to find people to jam with but unless you wanna country or gospel it's not happening.
The funny part though is anytime someone has a question about the mechanics if their vehicle guess who they come to...

I read this and had an urge to say my story which is still going on, at age of 13 i found punk and i still listen it now, but the thing is, when i was 18 i finished high school and sent sign up for police academy in my country, i was approved to join after lots of tests, i finished that while i was 19 and started working 2 months after graduation there. now i work as a police officer in my country where is hard to be a punk while u are in school, and imagine how is to me on workplace where ppl have prejudices about my subculture, but when im in the uniform im a cop, and when im off duty im a "weirdo" to them, some of them understand and dont say nothing, even ask some stuff that i didnt believe. and some of them judge me by the look and color of my vans shoes that are more than 2 colored or my hat that has 2 patches... mostly that kind of guys are older league and i dont mind it, i work my job like i have to, and thats it. i know that its a huge irony that i do what i do, but here is situation fucked up and hard to find a job, now i live alone, have pretty good income, pay my rent, pay my prepaids and lots of other stuff with 20 years. this is short version of my situation, can u imagine urself in it?
