One of the more dispiriting facts of consumer life is that panaceas don’t routinely live up to their promises. Sure, sometimes you get penicillin, a product that needs no introduction, but other times you get Dr. Ebeneezer Sibley’s Reanimating Solar Tincture, an elixir alleged to restore life in the event of sudden death.

And then there’s WD-40, a putative fix-all that boasts uses ranging from driving moisture from a flooded motor to killing roaches to breaking in baseball gloves to reviving drowned cellphones. Such is its pop-cultural ubiquity that it even co-stars in a well-known handyman apothegm: “If it moves and it shouldn’t, you need duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should, you need WD-40."

WD 40 and similar products do what you would expect (before those sprays people just used diesel)
The main problem is most people don't let the spray soak in enough.
WD sprays have helped me out a lot of times.

WD 40 is good for most general stuff but if I have a bolt that's really rusted on I use Liquid Wrench. It penetrates better than WD 40. Don't use WD 40 on bike chains or constantly moving parts either because it dries up too fast. Use grease or motor oil. Check the specs. I catch dumbasses all the time using WD 40 on bearings and other shit that should be greased properly. If you spray WD 40 on bearings it washes the grease away and you will seize that bearing.

Gotta admit that WD40 is pretty good stuff for expelling moisture and does work for freeing rusty bolts but all our maintenance guys in work swear by soaking rusted components in diesel overnight :) Applying heat to siezed bits works wonders too ;)

agree there. a lot of people use it but itll fuck your bearings up. youre better off using pure alcohol and drying it up after. i think gasoline works well too.

I use a Citrus cleaner. Then water. Then dry them. Then apply a little speed cream.

citrus, really? i thought citrus based cleaners were bad for your bearings. is that why you rinse with water?

Yeah. I was advised to use it buy a guy who works at my local skatepark. He's been skating for about 30 years so knows his onions.
