I don't believe in unnecessary labeling. Why do we need gutterpunk, street punk, anarcho and crust punk? Punk is Punk. Quit trying to divvy up what few Punks there are. Quit making new shit up. Quit overly-classifying everything. We're all misfits, so why is there need to have different kinds of misfit? It only causes division, and Punk is getting too small to be divided anymore.

i agree with you . i mean like gangsters are just gangsters and hippies are hippies why is punk different. its not like we call gangsters.. drive by gangsters or hood gangsters or idk so i think punk should stay punk. im sure [well i dont know for a fact but] when punk first came out i dont think they called eachother streetpunk or crust punk i think it would be "hey yeah i know that punk" or "yeah shes punk" rather than "no man shes not a street punk shes a gutter punk" thats all i got to say

I see it as tribal representation for instance their are indians but you can divide them up into the realization that there are navajo, hopi, blackfoot, etc.

I personally don't want to be associated with crusties they are nothing but sheeps in wolves clothing all hippy and bitching about peace......WAAAAAAH!

Just my outlook

gutter punks and chaos punks are the same thing just that the gutter punks are homeless.

Crusties are dirty bastards and hippies.

If its the music you are talking about the sub genres are good because you know what bands you like and the ones you might like that you haven't listened to yet.

For example i won't waste my time with anarcho stuff.

You're totally right. Avril fans & Fallout Boy fans are just like gutter punks. They should go bowling together.

yourscenesucks.com FTW.

and like someone else said before, I think its just one of those "tribe" like things were everyone carves their own niche or whatever. I think the important thing is that their should be unity between all the little tribes.

Also, I'm starting my own little tribe right now, called the "pot punx". What we listen to or how we dress doesnt matter, we just all get so stoned that we forget to actively participate in our own scene. Whos down? I got the bowl packed, who wants greens? weed)(*

I enjoy the division as a clear representation of what you stand for or musically like chaos82 said. Musically you can see what sound infused with the other sound to create a new sound and thusly a following in a new subcategory of punk rock music. It's good to have knowledge and be informed about what you are involved with in my opinion.

I agree that we should all get along in our entire comunity though. Also some of my best friends are skins and some of them are crusties or drunk punks(chaos) and some of them are just dirty train hoppin' hobos we all get along. Just for the record. I think it's nice to have different flags and a bit of divisionary lines as far as individuality.

no one is making anything up, just pointing out existing divisions. When punk started in the mid 70s in NYC, it was a whole bunch of different people with entirely different reasons for being there. When "77" died out, a few of the real "hardcore" started a new scene, and some went separate ways from punk.

Ian Mckay decided to stop being so hardcore put minor threat behind him, and be more emotional with fugazi, thats just one example, so is a few years earlier when he screamed out "I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't fuck...I got straight edge", so did an entire new division of HC got "straight edge" too, some people thought that was really dumb.

in the early 90s, the casualties jump started NYC's smoldering punk scene. Not everyone was thrilled to see studs and leather UK82/street punk revival on the streets of NYC. Some saw it as a slap in the face to NYCs own punk history. Another example.

At a certain point just about every squatter punk was doing it for posterity and was both welcome at home, and just about financed from home. Some people didn't like the hypocrisy of it all.

The west coast and the east coast used to beef, cause when they started, they attracted different people for different reasons, as the cultures of NYC and frisco where different.

Punk has been around for 30+ divisions are bound to happen. The divisions that exists are less important than why.

No one is trying to divide up anything. Divisions already existed. People just labeled them. Thats inevitable. Some sub-cultures of punk are as different as night and day, and so is the music, and backgrounds of the people behind it. Not even making an effort to understand the background and more importantly motivations of a certain group of people makes you seem really ignorant. Like pop culture ignorant, where they assign you a label, make a stereotype and expect you to live by it.

We're all misfits, so why is there need to have different kinds of misfit? It only causes division, and Punk is getting too small to be divided anymore.
I really don't give two shits what the rest of society things of you, good or bad. Its entirely irrelevant to me, because there seems to be very little solid logic behind it these days. What your really about is important to me. It doesn't matter how much you spent to lie, we'll find out eventually. Now a good chunk of all this conflict between sub-cultures is bullshit. At least near me, most of it is pretty much cooled though. Not everybody likes everything, or everyone else.

People want to associate with like minded people. Everyone has an innate psychological NEED to belong somewhere. So a lot of conflict will be avoided when you just respect the divisions.

Still, in this day and age, I am asking everyone who really considers themselves to be part of any underground culture(to include punk, industrial, hardcore, rockabilly), for a certain degree of unity, especially in the face of these pop culture twats.

I never said you have to like everything or everyone, but its important to pay your respects to all that is underground, if not just for not for the fact that they are at the very least not being part of the problem.
