I like KISS, and the Sweet. But you start going to the 80's and androgyny gives way to some kind of fetishistic blow dry hair ... you make really soft, light music and call it metal... I mean it is one of the few things that I will actually look at and say "That's GAY" in a BAD way, because normally, when I think something is gay, I LIKE IT... but there's something that makes me queezy when it comes to hair metal. When I say, "that's GAY" in terms of John Waters, or Andy Warhol, its a compliment. When I say, "That's GAY" in terms of mullet/beardo Kenny Loggins... well, you catch my drift.
In fact, hair metal did more to push me away from metal and into punk than anything else! I hated every minute of that stupid shit...
On the other hand, early to mid 70's glam really rocked and kicked ass and a lot of it was punk (New York Dolls, Wayne/Jayne County, etc.,). Hair metal and glam metal is a complete farce and an insult to anyone who grew up adoring androgynous sexually ambigous theatrical ROCK AND ROLL, because it sounds more like these self obsessed musical douches grew up listening to Journey, Toto, and Air Supply (who, ironically enough, cover a Sweet song "love is like oxygen") than to the New York Dolls, David Bowie, or Iggy Pop.
I mean, half of all glam metal bands from the 80's would be happy to play a large music festival with Phil Colins and Barbara Striesand, and most of the glam I listen to is stuff played in small bars, clubs, and at art openings.
I don't mean to insult you or rag on your music. If it makes you happy, that's great. I'm not trying to knock you. I have a friend who loves that music too and we constantly bicker over it. But I am really into 70's glam and toatally hate the farce that people called "glam" in the 80's. It isn't real glam. Real glam might win an approving place in the pages of Vogue magazine. This aweful fluffy saccarine shit from the 80's is more at home in some nerdy little teenager's trailer where his dad drinks heavily and admires his mullet in some cracked mirror.
80's glam had no taste, no subtlety, no mystery, and no cultural value. And it doesn't rock in the slightest way! It is one of the things I hate most in life, and if you look at my profile, you'll notice that I describe myself as "Glam."
*edit*
Truely, I don't want to get you upset-- the sad fact is that most music is so terrible anymore, that I may revisit the hair metal scene and decide it at least has camp value and start liking it.par*#

There is a time and place for Poison and Twisted Sister and all that. The time and place is usually when you're drunk as hell at a party. Fuck Bon Jovi and all those "power ballads" though!

Wow. I don't like any of those bands. I kinda thought Twisted Sister where funny because they looked extra extra sh*t in all the glam gear, but I could never really figure out if they where being serious. As for the rest I didn't like that period of Rock music at all.

Totally! I always liked Twisted Sister, honestly. Less for their music than their activism on behalf of freedom of speech in the recording industry. They were totally over-the-top with their costumes, but Dee Snider is kind of an over-the-top guy. He participated in a hearing with Frank Zappa and John Denver in 1994 regarding Tipper Gore's Parents' Music Resource Center. Heh. That still cracks me up. Tipper was on a mission to ban music and lyrics she felt were offensive and wound up creating the "EXPLICIT CONTENT" sticker that has opened more doors than it could ever have hoped to close. Why Tipper? Because she's a cow! Stupid, but that joke will never wear out its novelty for me. But the label of glam metal is something I've never heard before. I always knew it as hair metal. Heh. Learn something new every day!
