I kinda assume it's a "I'll book your band if you book my band" kinda thing.

Yes.
Show trading is when a band books you in their hometown and you return the favor. Almost every out of town unsigned band(not on tour) you have seen on a local show got their because of a promise they made to another band.

I'd say about 1 out of every 5 bands actually returns the favor.

Using this model if you are a promoter you can effectively book a lot of out of town bands and get your band a ton of outside shows.

I am a little surprised some folks especially underground music lovers on this site aren't aware of this practice. Damn that divide between musicians and fans! No seriously, get out and promote your scene...
