No way man. The Decendents are by far the superior band. Milo Goes To College is probably one of the most important hardcore records of all time. In fact, this thread just inspired me to put it on. If there was ever an album that ever represented the middle class punk expierience the best, it's this one.

I'd say the Descendents as well. Catalina and Tonyage are probably two of my favorite hardcore songs of all time.

Smalley was an awsome singer, and a cool guy. I don't see any point of comparing two bands in completely different leagues though.

Which of you kiddies knows which band Smalley made his name in which I would indeed compare to the Decendents?

Are you that fucking stupid? Hardcore? You've obviously never heard it. I'd say that the Decendents planted the seed of pop-punk...and I was there. You can't compare them to a single "hardcore" band of the day.

No I wont because I don't care. At best I'll say "Cool," and shrug my shoulders. Maybe download a couple tunes. I'm not mad because I don't know. I'm teasing you because you're belligerent and you have no idea how ridiculous you make your self look when you reply with one of your witty come backs.

That's probably because there were a lot fewer hardcore bands in 1982. I'm also not entirely convinced that we should be relying on memories of the punk scene from when you were 9.

I definitely can.

Some of their songs sound like sillier, poppier Minor Threat songs.

also pretty comparable to 'mommys little monster' and the adolescents s/t. clearly a hardcore album. the era alone dictates that it is.

Whatever. I can see there is no voice of reason here, and I grew up in Socal and have seen the Decendents a few times.

Dave Smalley sang for Dag Nasty. The only two albums worth a shit are Can I say, and Wig Out At Denkos. Just thought I'd save you all the dissapointment of buying Four On The Floor or one of their other crap records. Although I'm sure y'all have heard Dag Nasty before.

And there are good songs on Dag Nasty's newer albums too.

well everyone else has put forward some good reasons for why it is a hardcore record and youve pretty much just go 'uh uh, no its not'.. so whos the unreasonable one?

I don't really like Dag Nasty. I don't totally dislike them, but I don't see what's so great about them.

I think there is a good case that you can't say definitivly that the Decendenents sound like such and such a band because at the time the sound hadn't totally been refined yet. But they definitly share a lot of elements from other hardcore bands of the era.

Which elements are those? The only two Decendents songs that I can think of with any edge to them at all are Hurtin' Crue and Kids On Coffee, but those songs would be an exception to their norm.

When I Get The Time? I Wanna Be A Bear? Kabuki Girl? Myage? Hope?
San Diego Hardcore?
No. More like the roots of emo and pop punk.

Which was the begining of their end in my opinion, although I did like Wig Out. They actually had some other dude singing before they put anything out, but I can't remember his name.

I'm Not a Loser? Everytime I hear it, it makes me think of a Minor Threat song with better vocals.

M-16... My Dad Sucks... Descendents... I Like Food... Parents...

Anyway, you can keep disagreeing with us, but if you really feel so strongly about it, I suggest you go edit the Wikipedia entry, which refers to them as having a hardcore sound and coming from the LA hardcore scene.

Yeah, now. But those first few albums are closer to hardcore, which is whate everybody has been saying. Of course they describe themselves as power-pop and pop-punk. That 2004 album was nothing but!

They actually took that from a review by the LA TImes (I think) of one of their first eps.

You do make an interesting point though. The Descendents now suck. Although I do have a soft place in my heart for a couple of songs off the American ep.
