I've found a strange yet remarkably easy way to clean a pair of converse in almost no time at all, it's easy, cheap, strange. But of course if your a rich person who can afford to get theirs cleaned by their butler then this technique is useless to you. I found this out just last night when i was trying EVERYTHING to clean my shoes, it couldn't have been easier.

The Technique:

Get an old toothbrush, any old toothbrush or buy one cheap. You don't want an electric toothbrush, just an old toothbrush. If you find one and it's a bit dirty, clean it... Obviously.

Next you'll need toothpaste but not just any toothpaste.

Now simply put a bit of toothpaste on that old toothbrush and start scrubbing away at your shoes. It sounds strange but it works. After a gold ol' scrubbing at them they'll be clean and most likely smell minty. If you don't like them shining with a mint smell simply wipe the remaining toothpaste away with a CLEAN flannel, towel or cloth. I personally used this technique yesterday and it worked a wonder. If there are any questions or anything, just send me a message. I am confident enough that this will work.

NOTES AND WARNINGS:

DO NOT USE THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE TOOTHPASTE. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT IT MAY STAIN THE SHOES, I TRIED IT YESTERDAY AND IT TOOK ME AN HOUR TO GET IT OUT SO AVOID USING IT UNLESS YOU WANT RED WHITE AND BLUE STRIPED CONVERSE.

USE WHITE TOOTHPASTE, IT MAY LEAVE "STAINS" BUT YOU CAN SIMPLY WIPE THESE OFF WITH WATER.

The Method:

When scrubbing the canvas shoes i recommend you do it in a circular motion, as this will get the dirt out easier and is very simple to do. You can scrub up and down or side to side, but circular covers most areas.

How I Know This Works:

My shoes are sparkling clean and my toothbrush was almost black with all the dirt on it. I may make a video tutorial, as i believe this is an amazingly simple method.

Questions

Will this damage the shoes at all?

No, no and no again. If it damaged the shoes, i wouldn't keep doing it considering i've had mine less than a week.

Will it work on other types of converse ie: Leather or suede?

I really can't say as i've had no experience with this, but my instincts tell me no. Don't do this on suede or leather converse as the scrubbing may damage the material, use it on regular canvas converse.

My converse are customized ie: Spray painted, can i still do this?

Again, i don't know. If you've customized your converse to a certain extent it should be safe. But if you spent 5 hours spray painting "The Clash" or something on them then don't try this... I have no idea what toothpaste would do to spray paint.

Remember:

THIS METHOD IS FOR REGULAR, CANVAS SNEAKERS LIKE CONVERSE AKA CHUCK TAYLORS.

IF YOU TRY THIS ON ANY OTHER SHOE IT IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

This is the only cheap, and easy method i know. Don't buy converse cleaner, it's garbage. It's a waste of time and money, and it only makes your shoes smell like a new car.

I always just put them in with a load of laundry & wash 'em on cold.

Yeah that's alright to do... But some people don't like putting them in the washer because they think it will ruin them. A lot of my friends have them and refuse to put them in the washing machine because they think it will make the colour run.

That's what I've done with all mine. Washed em cold water with the rest of my crap.

I pop em in the wash too. When I used to work at Subway, we had this cleaning spry called "Purple Tiger". One day when we were slow and bored, we sprayed our converse with it. It took every stain out of the rubbery stuff imediately and did a good job at cleaning the canvas as well.

My Chucks are black monochromes... Is this still a good idea? I need to clean them badly, because they are my work shoes, and I clean bathrooms. I don't want to ruin them though, because they are my work shoes, and I don't want to go and spend another sixty dollars on a pair of all black shoes... Plus, they're fricken sweet!!!
