The Stingrays were formed in 1977 in the UK, and are still gigging today.
They have experienced various line up changes over the years, but have included: Russ Mainwaring (who is still a member, Russ played at London’s seminal Punk venue The Roxy) some other notable band members have included Bill Stair (Art Objects,Various Artists, Blue Aeroplanes), Chris Bostock, and Sean McLuskey (Subway Sect, Joe Boxers, If) and Paul Johnson (Massive Attack)
Their first single ‘Countdown’ was released on Fried Egg Records in 1979. There second,Never Do was released by Circus Records in 1980.They also contributed the track ‘Sound’ to the compilation album Avon Calling. The mini-album, ‘The Stingrays At the Dugout in '77: The Sound of Two Hands Clapping’, was recorded live at the legendary Dug Out Club, Park Row, Bristol. According to Steve Bush of Essential Bop said, "they were a bit like Bristol's equivalent of The Ramones. A rockin' unit with an advanced sense of irony."
A recent review of Back Across the Rubicon, The Stingrays CD of previously unreleased material, in Venue magazine said,
Punk-pop legends The Stingrays have made a welcome return to the live stage and released a retrospective of previously unavailable material called Back Across the Rubicon. To listen to this CD is to be instantly transported back to 1979, witnessing the kind of short, sharp songwriting that just doesn’t happen these day. Most of the tracks clock in at under three minutes, but despite the raw often grungy recordings, the songs sparkle with an enthusiasm and energy that’s impossible to ignore. Opener "Down at the Duck, for example could be a template for the punk-pop movement, with its three chord guitar assault and half shouted vocals. Where the Stingrays excel, however, is in never abandoning the pop element of their craft. These songs have just the right dose of melody to temper the grit |
