Well Craig, it would seem we agree on several fronts; while I personally do have a leather jacket, (it was 65 dollars and a birthday gift from my wife; things like that are actually pretty cheap here in "the big city", and very practical, but hey, when it comes right down to it, it's "rock and roll") I bemoan the moment everything became so uniform, boring and uncreative; like I said, the second everyone started sporting mohawks and Docs, I knew it was over. For me, the whole movement was never about what you wear, or even what you listen to or believe. It was simply about being true to yourself, whatever that was, and when people started going around chanting lyrics from the newest "punk anthem" ("do they owe us a living? of course they fuckin' do", etc) and sublimating anything that made them individuals so they could fit into some manufactured trend, that was (I'm sorry, but I was there) a shell of what the real thing had been about; regardless of how much angst or energy they carried, everything that was real about them got buried, and they became a joke.
