The Frog Prince of This Place

Rei-Lii screamed through the window, her clenched fists against the glass, threatening to smash it. Her heart pounded so loud between her sobs. He could hear her muffled voice, the poisons seeping into his flesh, through the plastic tubes and needles.

“You said you wouldn’t leave me! You said you would stay away from it this time!” She shouted over and over again. Through the glass, through the warnings that hung on the walls, through the people sitting behind her.

Yesterday, they had it all planned out. Everything. Where they would stay to how they would survive. Rei-Lii had fallen in love with him, when they met, not even four days ago. His name was Kyus. His name was short, like the dark curls of his hair, with little pieces of metal poking in and out of his face. How could a girl resist such a bad boy? Her long, dark silvery hair, her deep brown eyes and milky skin. He promised her a world of freedom. Yet she only wanted to be with him.

“Kyus......”her voice began to trail off, “how could you?”

His eyes slowly got heavier, still trying to keep his gaze locked with hers. The beat of his heart was slowing to a steady, quiet pulse, and his face lost some of its color.

“R...Rei-Lii.....” Kyus whispered, the loudest he could, “t...the lake....”

He exhaled the last bit of air in his lungs. Rei-Lii stared at his lips from where she stood.  Trying to make out the movements of lips, through the tears that flooded her eyes. She fell to her knees, her hands against the glass, she lowered her head and cried.

 Frog Princess?

She slipped off her shoes and sat in the warm green grass. The sun cast abnormal shadows through the leaves and spotted the ground around her. Leaning back with her arm behind her, she stared up into endless blue waves.

“Mind if I join you?” A deep almost rugged voice spoke, breaking her silence.

Rei-Lii looked around and saw a figure standing behind one of the birch trees. He leaned against, a cigarette hanging from his lips, smoke spilling from every breath. Turning around, he picked up the backpack from the ground and slung it over his shoulder and started walking towards her.

“Who are you?” she asked, not really wanting an answer. Falling backwards into the grass, she turned her head and saw him standing near her.

“Kyus.” Just one name was all he said to her. He didn’t have a last name, she didn’t care.

He sat beside her, and flicked the cigarette away. Kyus put his hand in his pocket and smiled at her, pulling out a deep red rose. He laid it next to her, awaiting her reaction. Rei-Lii sat up and gave him a weird look. Her heart fluttered, but she said nothing.

“Why so quiet Rei-Lii?” He asked her, and she wondered how he knew her name. “I grew this rose just for you.”

She was still silent. Taking the rose, careful not to prick her finger on the thorns, she leaned towards him. He looked at her, confused, and she kissed his cheek.

“The one who sits near the pond, not far from this lake,” she said quietly, “watching the roses grow unharmed. Kyus, The frog price?”

She laughed and stood up. He blinked twice and stuck out his tongue at her, then grabbed her hand and pulled her down. Her eyes went wide, and he laughed.

“Want to be my frog princess?”

The Rose That Killed a Frog

She bought in a pile of paper and files. Dropped them on the table and looked at Kyus. He had his feet up on the corner and a cigarette on his lips with a paper in one hand, the other in his hair. Rei-Lii walked around and stood behind him, leaning on him, her arms on his head.

“Are we going out tonight?” He looked up, without moving his head, “the frogs are having a party at the pond.”

“The frogs are always partying. Maybe we can go for dinner?” she asked, poking at his head.

He replied with a quiet “maybe...”

She was in the bathroom for half an hour, fixing her hair and make-up. Some final touches before they left for dinner. He pulled on a t-shirt and a pair of his cleanest jeans, not really caring if they were clean or not.
