I am FARRRR away from having children!!! but i often wonder "if i had a child would i let him/her watch television?"I, personally have made the decision to not watch television!!!However, My parents never sheltered me from anything!!! i was allowed to watch television! and i feel like i would have missed out on alot of HUGE pop culture references if i was not allowed to watch tv! I have also learned alot of things from watching television! but i dont want my hypothetical child to watch television and not understand what he/she should or should not believe! I also dont want my child to get swept up in the mass media portrayal of women, drugs,drinking,sex,religion, and race!!! i want my hypothetical child to be able to think for his/her self and make his/her own opinions about the previously mentioned subjects without being swayed in one direction or the other!!!My fear is not that my child will watch too many music videos or see to much violence,sex, or recreational drug use!My fear is that he/she wont be able to form his/ her own opinions about the subjects!At the same time... i feel like i should let him/ her sway in which ever direction they would naturally go to without my intervention! but if the media is intervening with my childs natural thought process and ideas then i need to be there to counteract it!!!!
