All this talk about the Jubillee has got me thinking about the other one (1977) Even though the Pistols had the single 'God Save The Queen' the soundtrack to the jubillee for us was the Clash's 1st album, as we were still waiting for the Bollocks to be released. Micky Boytons Rd was having a street party as was Boleyn Rd where a lot of my family lived. Paul Spicer (Corvettes bassist) was the DJ for the Boleyn Rd party and we promised that we would pop round to see him. We all met up at Micks house and there was a lame covers band playing. Me and Simmo were persuaded to get up and sing Blue Suede Shoes and once I got going Simmo never got near the mike again! I loved it and it was my first time singing on stage. After this we all went round to see Paul and as we rounded the corner he saw us and put on the Ramones new single, Sheena Is A Punk Rocker. It felt good to walk into the party with some good music blaring but we were met by a gang of local men who didnt want 'our kind round here'. I protested that my family lived here but they were all up in their flats so no one could vouch for me and they told us to go. We then said that the DJ was our mate and we had come to see him. They nearly threw Paul out with us when they found this out so we had to leave pronto. We wandered back to Micks rd and went to the other end of the road and someone opened their front windows and we pulled the speakers out on to the front windowsill and played the Clashs 1st album over and over. It was a great night and all very strange as loud music in the street was not the norm back then.

I'm really looking forward to watching it Lee-if only to see how many more pubs and people I knew appear on the show ;) I watched the show about TV Smith last week which seemed a bit strange at the time as the night after I was in the pub with him!!!!

At least in 1977, you had some places that would let you in looking like that. There was only one or two places in Chicago that would let you in looking like that and you had to be 21! (And god help you if the Chicago Police got their hands on you, let alone the locals) In New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, the punk look was a bit more accepted because they had good bands, and very strong scenes/community support. (But even then, the cops didn't take too much of a liking to punks. Riots between the punks and the L.A.P.D. are legendary)

Adam-we couldn't always get away with it over here! I remember we spent the first jubilee drinking in the Royal Oak pub in Dagenham where we were pretty much left to our own devices as leather jackets and oddball hairstyles were the norm there but getting home intact was a bit of a mission for some of us that night ;)

Wish I could get away with that where I live.
