| BAND BIO |
Punk's not dead and
it never went away. It has been pushed underground for decades by the
media because it speaks of the truth and exposes hypocrisy, but with the
political climate of the world rapidly changing, a new female oriented
punk resurgence has created a movement across the globe from Russia with
Pussy Riot to countless others. One band in particular is shaking
things up with intense live shows and are about to release their debut
album. Hailing from the birthplace of Democracy, Barb Wire Dolls is a
politically charged female-fronted Punk trio from Greece that combines
the furious raw elements of first wave punk and grunge rock into a
modern melodic sound that decimates hearts and minds. Described by
Guitar World magazine as "a true-to-the-genre punk band" Barb Wire Dolls
is fronted by the fiery and outspoken femme-fatale singer Isis Queen,
along with guitarist Pyn Doll and drummer Krash Doll. The band came
together while living in an artist commune on the island of Crete, and
with Greece in a state of political turmoil and bankruptcy, fate and
destiny intervened when DJ Rodney Bingenheimer of KROQ radio station in
Los Angeles -the first DJ to spin records in the U.S. by the Ramones,
Sex Pistols, Blondie, Hole, and Nirvana -started playing the bands' demo
and invited the Greeks to perform stateside. Within a few weeks Barb
Wire Dolls sold everything they owned and re-located to Los Angeles.
"Grecian imports the Barb Wire Dolls have taken The Sunset Strip by
storm" writes the Roxy Theatre as their first show at the historic venue
sold out and made history as they became the first punk band from
Greece to perform in America. The band quickly cemented their place at
the top of the newly emerging L.A. punk scene attracting to their shows
rock icons Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag), Jello
Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Jennifer Finch (L7), and Frances Bean Cobain
(Kurt and Courtney Love's daughter). Barb Wire Dolls garnered further
attention both in the U.S. and abroad, and appearances at the South by
Southwest Music Festival and headlining tours of the U.S. and Europe
generated a global buzz. 'Street Generation' a track off of their demo
charted a Top Ten radio hit in South America.
"With unity there is power, with power there is change. Without these
two you can't have your freedom!" yells Barb Wire Dolls' singer Isis at
a crowd of thousands before spontaneously exiting the stage and
climbing to sing from the rafters high above, putting the audience into a
frenzy. The sounds of anger and inspiration that collides in Barb Wire
Dolls is a stripped down to the basics, take-no-prisoners onslaught of
liberating music that becomes a sonic weapon of aggression. Their live
show tears down the pretensions that have poisoned mainstream rock
today. "Leaving a trail of rock-n-roll devastation in their wake, Barb
Wire Dolls throw down the gauntlet to today's pre-fab rebellion,
pointing a middle finger where it so clearly belongs." writes Blank TV.
Fueled by a demand for change, it's the reflection of frustrated
ambitions in a society that habitually attempts to repress freedom and
self-expression that drives Barb Wire Dolls forward. "Their music
carries a message, much like the anarchy of the Sex Pistols, but without
the 'no future for you' aspect of it" writes the UK's Mudkiss magazine.
Punk has always been about rebellion and these modern Greek
revolutionaries are bearing another set of 'gifts' with eleven new songs
on their much-anticipated debut album Slit. Recorded in Chicago by
Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Stooges), the songwriting on Slit is an
examination of societies' absurdities that attempt to bury the truth of
who and what we really are and the urgency to heed the wake-up call
before it’s too late.
Press:
"Every few years or so a band comes along that changes the music
landscape. They are different from the other bands that are out there.
They bring something new and exciting to an otherwise generic music
scene that the public has grown tired of. The Beatles did this, The Sex
Pistols did this, Guns N' Roses did this, Nirvana did this. But for the
past 20 years no band has been able to stand out from their
predecessors. No band has been able to re-ignite the music scene, to
bring back the energy it once had....that is until now. With their
sound, their look and their attitude, Barb Wire Dolls are going to do
what no band has been able to do within the last two decades...take the
music industry by storm." - Sugarbuzz magazine |
