Band formed in 1978, for four
years of organised chaos ..determined not to 'sell out', have
fun and 'blow every other band that came into contact with
them ...off!! ..either with good tunes ...attitude or shaving
foam on paper plates with 100's and 1000's sprinkled on top
and used as a precursor to Tiswas as custard pies (Quentin
Termite et al 1977). Tubby Pickles was soon on the scene as
manager. teenagers with attitude and bad breath. leaving a
right mess everywhere they went. great tunes on the crest of a
massive punky wave. answered an ad in sounds magazine for
guaranteed gigs in manchester. went to NW arts on king street
on a tuesday night on the x43 from Burnley with wide kex ...we
were kids ...the manchester musicians collective ...met other
unknowns at the time ...martin hannet ...frantic
elevators ...fall, joy division, spherical objects ...a certain
ratio ...buzzcocks ...and true to their word played 'band on
the wall' ...twice. the second time we were approached by Dave
Bentley and he wanted to make 1000 singles and so DEATH TO
DISCO was born ...bing bong! complete with wallpaper sleeve synth
no bass and full on! played regularly around Manchester ...and
the North ...supported The Undertones, The Clash, and er Mick
Hucknall ...when he was a frantic elevator ...god did he sell out
big time? ...blew them all off completely ...we were the real punk
underclass ...absolutely nothing to do with the pretentious
factory records bollocks and were more influenced by steve
diggle and the wonderful buzzcocks! we were young fools
approached by Dave Bentley on our second appearance for
manchester musicians' collective at band on the wall 1978 for
first record deal: 1st Release Death to Disco on Bent records
March 79 ...where are you now Dave Bentley? Gary Brown joins
on Bass ...stolen from the pathetix (the sensies arch rivals)
with promise of better tunes and 8 pints of Tetleys. The
music gets better ...the 'sensies are getting two coachloads of
fans travelling to their gigs and making a 'bit of a stir'
wherever they go'. (Billy Jacobs, burnley express. may 12 1979)
they answer an ad in sounds and soon find themselves in a tent
in market drayton ...covered in flies and a swarm of other
various unindentifiable insects. its redball records! 2nd
single (Im in Love with) Margaret Thatcher reaches no1 in
independent charts ...b side Teenage Revolution and Garry
Bushell's band of the week (it's like rocking horse shit in both
sound and in its rarity. Met a man called Simon Wagbeard
wearing dungarees in a pub in Colne who ousted Tubby to
become our new manager ...Recorded John Peel session early
1980 ...maida vale ...got banned from there too ...someone who
shant be mentioned nicked a microphone ...you know who you are!
Appeared at Futurama festival, Queens Hall in Leeds September
14th 1980 ...gary glitter and u2 ...too! what a lethal
combination ...don't even go there! ...a BBC2 ARENA feature one
of the rare glimpses of the Notsensibles on TV. album Instant
Classic released same year rated five stars by Sounds
magazine. Followed by full page interview by Gary Bushell. (his
band of the week). (the sensies arch rival). originally on BENT
RECORDS, the reissue front cover was designed and drawn by Alan
Whalley aka Boffo ...later of Chumbawamba fame ...aided by
Haggis bunking off school and Gary bunking off ? and providing brews and stuff ...see
if you can see yourself in it! ...look out for an early
appearance by Danbert Nobacon in his seminal 'ploppy was a man
he was a drumming man'. appeared at Electric Ballroom August
1981, with Splodgenessabounds (the sensies arch rivals) and
Peter and the Test Tube Babies, followed by tour of scout huts
in remote locations. Max is proper scared of haggis. The
sensies were let loose in Letcliffe park, Barnoldswick,
Lancashire amid cries of disgust and horror among the locals
and calls for the linching of the head honcho of Pendle
Borough Council's leisure service department. (Barnoldswick and
Earby Times). Supported many pressure groups including the
right for dogs and their owners to crap in the park. released
I am the Bishop / The Telephone Rings again ...covered in the 21st
century by a band I've forgotten the name of ...oooh the Zodiac
Killers ...from San Franscico ...how weird is that??!! Sage
quits in October 1981 and is replaced on guitar by Paul
Wright. Haggis no longer looks like FA CUP HEAD and everybody
starts liking him. Band stagger on for another few months and
decide to take a break, after a storming gig at Coventry
Polytechnic in March 1982. the break went on and on until
August 1996 with a reappearance at the first Wasted / Holidays
in the Sun festival in Blackpool, with Scott Wilkinson (Walter
Mitty's Head) replacing Paul Wright on guitar. more
hibernation until August 2005 and a successful reunion
...original line up at the 25th anniversary of the Railway
Workers' what a buzz was had by all! :) lots of great gigs in
2006 & 2007. currently working in the studio (provided
that it doesn't clash with Burnley home games) for imminent
release of new stuff ...notsensibles.com
